So if I take my sheltie swimming in lakes and rivers a lot because its good exercise and easy on his joints should I bathe him after every swim?

Personally, I would. But that is just me. I love a clean sheltie. You never know what might have crawled into their coat!

I always hose down Gavin after a dip in the ocean to at least remove some of the salt.

I used to rinse Hollie off after a swim. But if she was in salt water I would always wash her. Shelby doesn’t do much more than get her legs wet.

I usually do the smell test. Do they stink when they dry? If so, quick bath. If not, I let it go. Shelties are truly wash and wear dogs--even thought they don't look it!
