The teeth of the Shetland Sheepdog

Can you help me with a question about the teeth of the Shetland Sheepdog at shows?

May they miss teeth and how heavy are these faults?

Missing the P1 = no error or light fault? The dog gets still outstanding?

Missing the P2 = no error or light fault? The dog gets still outstanding?

Missing the P3 = minor error or negligence? The dog only get a very good?


What is the rule at the shows for the teeth?

I understand that there are many Sheltie's that the P1 or P2 are missing.

Therefore this question,so it is clear in the future.


Ps: Can be bred with a dog that the P1 or P2 is missing?

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I know the answer to your questions.

I just looked up the AKC's Sheltie Standard, and here is what it said:

Faults-- Two-angled head. Too prominent stop, or no stop. Overfill below, between, or above eyes. Prominent nuchal crest. Domed skull. Prominent cheekbones. Snipy muzzle. Short, receding, or shallow underjaw, lacking breadth and depth. Overshot or undershot, missing or crooked teeth. Teeth visible when mouth is closed.

I assume you are talking about missing premolars? If so generally here we try to breed with dogs that have full dentition(all their teeth). Now its also fully acceptable for dogs with 1 or 2 missing premolars to become CH's but you have to ask yourself at what point do you draw your line and say thats too many missing?

Personally I wouldnt breed to one with more than 1 missing premolar..

Sadie's missing a bunch of teeth, around 6-8 all total (approx two on each side, top and bottom). I was told that because of this she never could have been shown, she would have been penalized to heavily.

My vet said me from a pet stand stand point its a good thing. With such big gaps there's less chance of food and debris getting stuck between the teeth.

Ginny, Sadie's half sister (Same mother, different father) is missing teeth too 4-6 I think. Sadie's mother was missing teeth too, but much less than my girls. Ginny's brother from her litter wasn't missing any teeth, interestingly enough.
