Urgent! FOUND COLLIE. Need advice & info ASAP

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would post here for help. I found a lost, malnourished, dehydrated, completely matted beyond belief, tri collie tonight on my way home from work. I could not leave her on the street. Another car stopped and helped me catch her. She is now resting in my veranda where I put out blankets and two heaters (it has been below -30 at night here and with windchills even colder!) I shutter to think how she got here. By the looks of her she is very, very thin, weak and matted so has not been looked after for months.

I do not know what to do. I have not let her near my dogs as I do not know if she has something that they can catch. I do not want to call the local pound or humane society as they have a 'kill policy'. I do not know what to do. I feel so bad for her. She is so gentle and passive. When she saw my two she started to whine. It breaks my heart to see her and the condition she is in. I would love to give her a bath, she is beyond filthy. She drank lots, but will not touch any food (I went and got some kibble from my sister's neighbour for her)

Any advice????? Please, I do not want to turn her over to someplace where they may put her down.
I am uploading some pics of her.

ohmyword
that poooooooooooor dog
I would have done the same... now what?
could you contact the SPCA to foster the dog, they would help with Vet costs etc.. So you they could bring the dog in to Vet/techs to ensure she has no disease, etc that way you could get help in taking care of her? I had that done numerous times through the local SPCA for stray, feral kittens I continued to rescue... Even though they had a kill policy there as well, but no need to kill an animal that ALREADY has a foster home...

I wish I was there to help!!! I'd be at your doorstep

POOR THING! I totally agree, do NOT call the pound! That would be it for her!

God sent you a lost soul to look after! Thank you for taking this lost soul into your heart and home. I don't know what you financial means are, but a trip to the vet if you can manage it will answer a lot of questions for you and help let you make the decision to let this baby near yours.

In that one pic, it almost looks like a collar or something around her neck?

As you are doing, keeping her warm is the first and most important thing right now. Do you have some chicken broth or something you can try to give her? It would be some nutrition. Do you have some canned food? That may be more tempting than kibble, but if she is really hungry, you would have thought she would have eaten it. Maybe she is overwhelmed.

It looks like the flakes on her head is dry skin.

In the morning, you can look at the local papers and see if there is any ads for a lost dog and call local vets as well. If there is a Collie resuce in your area you could call them as well because sometimes when someone loses a pet they will call to see if it has been turned in there. That's a place to start.

Hopefully someone who runs resuce on the forum can help you. As we have read time and time again, some dogs are lost for months, living off the land and surviving. Maybe her family is looking for her and she is loved and wanted somewhere. I pray that is true and she can find her family or get a new one if someone was so cruel as to have dumped her.

She is very calm. I think she knows I am trying to help her. With a little urging she got into my car and settled right down on Chinook's bed in the back seat. She would not leave the car however, and finally when she did, she had a very hard time manouvering around (small car) and she looked like she was very stiff - possibly from the cold or arthritis?? or both) I will try the chicken broth. I feed raw, so no canned food (that's why I had to go to my sister's neighbour for kibble) but I do have canned fish??? Would that be OK? At least she drank water. I put that collar on her (also from my sister's neighbour) - she had no collar on. I cry when I see her and think of what she's gone through in this cold (I mean COLD - well below -22 Farenheight, or -30 C and with the wind below -40!!!!)

I emailed the collie rescue, thanks Hopeshelties.

Oh this just breaks my heart! Poor baby! Thank heavens you have her now. I doubt she would have survived very much longer out there by herself.

I think cooked meat would do just fine. Steamed or boiled chicken and some rice if you've got any. That's quite mild and smells delish to a dog (compared to kibble).

I think for now just let her be, keep her warm and hydrated and try to feed her? A bath, while needed, might be too much for her right now. Maybe tomorrow if you still have her with you.

What she really needs right now seems to be someone to talk to her softly and pat her and stroke her chin and tell her everything is going to be alright. Maybe a little massage might loosen those leg muscles too.

I agree totally, try the suggestions of cooked chicken, chicken broth, rice. I think as well, she needs reasurring & comfort, until perhaps you contact a local rescue,or possibly taking her in permanantly. Maybe your vet has information on a lost Collie, that someone has reported.
Be interesting to know if she has been chipped or tattoed.

There is reason you found her,and thank you for taking her in to comfort her.I'm sure with the blistering cold you have been getting for weather, she may not have lasted much longer.
We will keep this sweet one in our thoughts & prayers.

I don't have anything to add to the others' responses, but I had to say how kind it was of you to stop and bring her into your home. I'm so happy to hear that she knows you are there to help and I hope that she is able to eat something soon...it might perk her up a bit.

Good luck with her.

My goodness, her markings are gorgeous. She will be a beauty when cleaned and groomed regularly.

Does your vet offer a discount clinic morning? Ours does (once a month, $10 shots, free diagnosis and check up), if he/she does, maybe he would check her over for you for little or nothing.

I agree with everyone, a little cooked meat, a little chicken baby food and rice, chicken broth and warm water, maybe a carrot. Lots of talking to her, maybe a soft radio. I would also leave food available to her, she may not be willing to eat in front of you for fear of confrontation (...picture dog in garbage eating and human yelling, get away from there...).

I wouldn't give her a bath though it would be what I would want to do too. Not for a day or two; however, I can't wait to see her cleaned up, but remember to think like a dog and really she just wants to rest right at the moment. Maybe some brushing and a dry shampoo and a light massage(I know, I am spoiled as well to a clean dog).

Keep us posted, and hopefully there is a family out there looking for her.

GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR HOUSE.

And ask the shelters, you don't have to leave her but if someone is looking for her they would check there. My bet is the dehydration is effected her appetite which will improve once she gets some water in her (but then I am far from knowledgeable).
