Thank you, Kelly, for giving all the Sheltie lovers in Sheltie Nation an opportunity to share our stories, questions and comments!! This forum is a terrific idea.

We have had five Shetlies in our lives--two were rescues, the others from breeders. We lost our beloved Scruffy and Bandit at age 13 two years ago, and now we're owned by Ivy, age 10; Pixie, age 2, and Barkley the Wild Man, age 1. Ivy is a 20 lb. Tri female, Pixie at 18 lbs and Barkely at 20 lbs are sables. Barkley's aunt Annie just took Best Female Sheltie at Westminster a few weeks ago for the second year!

We got Barkley as a playmate for little Pixie, who had a tough puppyhood. After a bad case of coccidia which she came home with from the breeder at 9 weeks, she developed colitis and canine epilepsy. Through the use of really good natural food I've been able to control her colitis, and we treat her epilepsy with a combination of two prescription homeopathic supplements. I'm happy to say she has not had a seizure since she started on them last October!

Barkley, who was supposed to be Pixie's "boy toy," terrorizes her! So much for getting her a playmate...that role is still filled by Moi. I've done Obedience with Pixie, Agility with Ivy, and hope to train Barkley in some Agility as well once he's a bit older.

After raising two children who have left the nest, we just love our Sheltie furkids. You don't have to send them to college or give them weddings!

Welcome Ann

Ok I'm going to show my ignorance but what is coccidia??:eek2:
You deffinately sound like you have a full house !! Grooming must take all day !!:uhoh: But These dogs are so well worth it aren't they . I had one sheltie and one mixed breed. The sheltie we lost on 10/26/07 she passed having dental work done. She was 10 years young. our other dog is 12 years old but just a mutt. She misses her younger sister ( our Sheltie , Jewel ). We have a deposit on a sable and white pup that was just born on the 19th of this month Feb,08. Have a great day !!

Coccidia

Hi Elaine! Coccidia is quite simply, worms. Most puppies have them, but coccidia is tougher to get rid of apparently. My little girl was on Albin (the antibiotic used for it) and metronidazole, or flagyll--a very strong drug for puppies--for months and while she was sick (and she was VERY sick, with fevers, diahhrea, vomiting), the vet I was using then vaccinated her anyway. This brought on seizures and now she has epilespy. Needless to say, I have a new vet, who practices a combination of mainstream and holistic medicine. Anyway the breeder we got Pixie from said she didn't realize the litter had worms...but the very day we brought her home she had awful runs. The lady was feeding the puppies adult supermarket kibble (dreadful under any circumstances!) and that didn't help. It took me the whole first year of her life to find a good food that she could tolerate but we finally have. Now she eats Timberwolf and a raw diet every other night, all with a chicken base and no flare-ups. Of course, Diva that she is, she'd much rather share my plate...

Hi Ann

Thanks for the info. It is good to learn new things. I can't believe that breeder didn't know about the worms, don't they have to be vet checked? Here is my ignorance again? I thought pups had to be innoculated and vet checked before they could be sold ?:eek2: I Well it's great that you got that pup so she got the right treatment.:smile2: To feed pups adult dog food :uhoh: Not intelligent!! Then the vet giving her the shot even though she was not well, then seizures due to it OH my God !! I would have freaked !! Isn't awful how we trust our vets just as our own drs. and then they dissappoint us by making a bad judgement call causing a bigger problem! Best of luck with your little ones. Shelties' rule !!
