14Week-old Puppy Isn't Fluffy- Purebred or Mix?

My Dickens had a very short coat and a rat tail to boot, but by six months he had grown out of both. His coat still isn't as long as the average Sheltie's, but it's beautiful and very easy to take care of. As for his tail, it's like a plume, usually carried straight down, except when his interest in something is piqued.

Here's a video of Dickens at three months:

And one of him at two years:

Your's is fluffier than my Honey was at that age. When we got her she looked more like a chihuahua than a sheltie, huge ears, little rat tail, and a completely flat coat. Around six months it started getting longer and looking like someone was constantly rubbing it the wrong way. She never grew into a coat like you'd see on a show dog, but it's very long and fluffy despite that.

I could not open the link, but just fyi....coats grow in at different stages depending on the dog and the time of year.

My Callan (he is the one on the left of my profile picture) always has had a crazy coat. Indy, the one on the right, used to as well, but as he got older. he dropped a lot of the undercoat, and now looks like a normal sheltie in coat.
My 15 week old puppy (the middle dog) , looks like a typical 15 week old sheltie puppy. Gangly and scrangkly. Long legs and flying ears! It's all normal! Don't expect to see a really full coat before 1-2 years old! Really!

When I was watching.. My Mandy checked all her toys to see which one was squeaking lol.
Beautiful sheltie. Mandy is just over 12 weeks, she is all fluff with a rat tail that curls over her back.
I have pics on shutterfly- Veraandfurrbabies.

That's a normal Sheltie puppy coat. They go through several stages over two to three years (yes, years!) before their full Sheltie coat comes in. Your pup's lineage will tell you what kind of coat he'll have. He will shed that puppy fluff in his first year and grow in more coat, but it still won't be his full, adult double coat, so be patient!

Regular grooming and good quality food encourages coat growth. Use a pin brush and spritz the coat lightly with water and brush him regularly.

Hello Sheltie Family!

Thanks for your replies and all of the beautiful pics and videos of your babies!! They're all so precious!!!
I just wanted to update you all on Tucker and his coat growth. You were right- he was going through his awkward stage, and 4 months later he finally looks like a Sheltie (y)

I've updated my album so that you can see his growth. It's really amazing how much his fur grew between December 6th and January 6th... almost a half inch (maybe more)!!! :woot: https://flic.kr/s/aHskJNfBUQ

Hopefully this can help someone else who's questioning their puppy's fur growth, and for everyone else, enjoy watching a growing pup
