911 HELP!!! Destruction issues

Well... I took a hard look at what I was doing. Chai was messing on the carpet, so I kept him in the kitchen...the gate broke, so I used a piece of wood to block him in the kitchen. To him it looked like a wall, he could no longer see the family. Separation anxiety is what his destruction seemed like to me.

Well, I leave the back door open so he can come and go to the puppy proofed fenced in back yard. When I first brought him home, I was training Chai to go to the shower (I put his wee-wee pad in there). He pooed in the shower, but still piddled on the carpet...that's why he ended up blocked in the kitchen.

For the last 3 days, no accidents, so I gave Chai the run of the house. I still watch him very closely. All the destruction has stopped, if he gets hold of anything he shouldn't, I take it and give him a proper toy. I put him in his kennel at night, and if I have to leave the house and can't take him with me. I seldom can go out, my mother, who lives with me, needs round the clock care.

My mother this morning (she has Alzheimer's) blocked Chai on the wrong side of the wood gate, the back door was open for him, but he couldn't reach it... Chai used the shower this morning instead of the carpet. I'm so happy I could pop!

Thank you for the warning 2GoodDogs, I won't give him a washcloth. He already had to lose his blanket that I had in the kennel because he chewed it and I was afraid he would choke.

Just thought I'd add that anything you give him be it bones, rawhide etc make sure you supervise him and take it away if it gets too small, torn etc. Don't give anything except a teething toy if your not there to supervise.:biggrin2:

Happy day!

Chai is house broke as long as the back door stays open to the yard... LOL, today we install a doggie door. I have been hanging a blanket over the door opening with a heater directed at it, it's been cold here in Illinois by the Wisconsin border.

The destruction is under control, I just remove whatever stick, paper or whatever he can find from his mouth and give him a proper chew. unless he thinks it's really yummy, he is willing to drop it.

Last night for the first time...drum roll... he slept in the bed with me instead of his kennel. For the last 3 nights when I say bedtime he went to my bed, I would have a little chase game and herd him into the kennel. Once in bed he settles down and sleeps all night.

1:00am I couldn't sleep, so I let Chai out of the kennel... he disappeared, and I found him on my bed. When I finally got tired, I just crawled in too... I think I like the new arrangement. Chai sleeps up top near my waste, and Atticus takes the foot of the bed like always.

How big do Shelties get again??? I only have a twin bed.... :eek2:

So glad things are working out for you and Chai, I also let Piper sleep on my bed starting at around 5 months old or so (he did pee on my bed once but I caught him in the act and boy was he embarrassed, he'd never do it again). As to the bed I think you need a bigger bed , with a shepherd and a sheltie I don't see how there's room for you on a twin bed:biggrin2:.
