Abby has lyme

Her 3rd tick disease. We walk in a park around the ball fields, not in the woods, which takes about 1 hour. We have no woods at our house. I check her and remove ticks every night or when i see her scratching.. How/why is this happening to us?

My question is - when Abby had rmsf she got 1 - 100mg/doxy 2x a day. this wiped her out and she did not want to eat, that was for only 7 days. For her Annaplasmosis her old vet treated her with 1/2 tablet 100mg 2x a day and she was fine and the annaplasmosis was gone after 30 days of treatment. I don't want her to be sick for 30 days around the holidays. What dosage did you use to treat your dog?? Was it the full tablet or 1/2 tablet? Did your dog feel sick with 200mg/day? i know i should follow the vets recommendations...

Right now she had some lunch and is getting 1/2 tablet with some metacam then after dinner another 1/2 tablet.

Poor Abby! You have to get out of CT. too many ticks!

My dogs have never been prescribed doxy, so I don't know anything about the dosage. I have heard that lyme disease can do serious damage to internal organs, so I would consider sticking with what the vet suggested.

I'm sure there are other members here that can chime in with more valuable info on lyme and doxy than me. :biggrin2:

I hope Abby feels better soon and this is the last of those pesky ticks!

I believe all tick diseases can cause serious organ problems as well as joint problems. My concern is if she won't eat she can't take doxy. I had to really force her and hand feed her for the last 2 days when she had RMSF and she only took that for 7 days. I can't imagine doing that with this disease for 25 days. There has to be another way. My second sheltie had lyme and her treatment was 1/2 tablet, (different vet). So i'm totally confused and lost.:confused2:

I do not know proper dosage for your meds either. You could try giving some antinausea meds Cerenia? with abx treatment... Lots of abx do give digestive upset.
I found 1 tick on Che and so far he had no symptoms and I will do blood work in a couple months to see what happened. What I wanted to share is that I belive that immune system responce could be improved. I have ordered herbal abx and immune system booster from Only natural pets company. We just started so I have no results but that something I would consider.

My dogs have gotten either 1/2 or 3/4 twice daily (50 - 75 mg). Barkley has recurring Lyme every summer and my vet treats him for 4 - 6 weeks with 3/4 pill twice daily. He weighs about 21 lbs. Connecticut is the pits this time of year; mine are on preventative and deer ticks were dropping off them like dust until about a week ago. Hopefully it will abate some now that it's cold, but be aware that deer ticks are active from fall till spring if the ground isn't snow covered.

I haven't had a problem with Barkley eating on doxy, but I have had with other dogs who we've treated. My best suggestion is one of the prescription tummy foods, like Canine ID (dreadful ingredients, I know, but it does work for upset tummies) for the duration of her treatment. You can mix a bit of baby food chicken from the little jars to entice her if needed, that almost always works.

Barkley is usually a bit less active at the beginning of treatment too, but I think some of that is the illness. It really does knock one out, canine or human. Perhaps once she's off the Metcam and just on the doxy her appetite will return. Please keep us posted.

Marque got 100 mg/day in two 50 mg pills for 30 days. He was very, very symptomatic when finally diagnosed, but has had low titers since.

I am so sorry. I hate the shots and Frontline, but we feel we have no choice. Even so, Bits got Lyume (asymptomatic) and had to be on doxy.

Hopefully Abby recovers ASAP. That is horrible she had to have contact with lyme disease. I can't help you with the meds, but I certainly do feel bad for the both of you. Good thoughts for fast progress.
