Abby - RMSF

I didn't realize Abby was done with the doxycyclene. Hmmm, that is a bit more worrisome then if she isn't eating. After six days she should have regained her appetite, I think. Dr. Shelli may be able to give you more information though, once she's on.

I don't feed raw so I can't be much help in that department, but I would explore the reason for her lack of appetite with your vet at this point. If she's done with the doxy, it's fine to give her yogurt. Dairy products decrease the effectiveness of doxycyclene...that's the reason they tell us not to feed it when a dog is on it. (and people too, actually!)

The one thing I've been told consistently by my vet about Doxycyclene is that dogs should have NO dairy products while they are on it. So no yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. Many people don't know this, I find.

I've been told this as well.

If she has been off for 6 days she should be eating better at this point. Doxy can cause irriation to the lining of the esphagus when swallowed if it gets stuck. Bigger issue in cats who are not great pill takers and are often dry pilled. We recommend following them up with a shot of water to make sure its down. When I've had to give my dogs doxy I wrap it in a treat and then have them drink water(mine drink on command). I would definitely explore the reason with your vet. Possible mouth irriation?

Could be she just likes chicken and rice. Have you tried just a raw whole piece of chicken like a split breast? Will she eat that? I have fed whole raw eggs shells and all. My dogs like them . Diva the most. :smile2:

Wow, that is interesting, just try a whole raw chicken breast or even a raw egg shells and all, sounds easy enough!. If a dog has never eaten raw like that before, do you have to slowly wean them?

I can answer that! Bentley took to eating a raw chicken drumstick immediately. I think he thought we accidentally dropped it because he didn't put it down!

Not sure about a permanent transition, though.

I changed mine cold turkey. I started with bone in chicken. I left the skin on but for some dogs thats too rich at first and it helps to take it off. I fed just that for atleast 2 weeks and then started adding in a new protein every couple weeks and then the organ meats after a month or so when I had firm stools(liver and kidney mostly). Heart ,tripe are considered meat. Over time, you feed 80% meat, 10% bone 10% organ 5% of which is liver. You feed 2-3% of adult weight. Mine eat chicken, turkey, beef, pork, pheasant, deer, elk and some bison plus eggs. No leg bones of cows, deer or elk as they are too hard, no sawed bones too sharp and watch sodium content of meat(what is called enhanced) sodium should be under 80-100. Easy as that. I don't do fish. Ember and I gag. So I supplement Salmon oil. You can find lots of good info in the BARF/RAW food threads.

Thanks - great info - I'll look into this.

I find reading all these threads on feeding raw very interesting! Thank you Dr. Shelli for taking the time to explain in simple yet very detailed description of how you feed raw
