I have recently started using ice on ice on Maggie but I notice it doesn't have much of a scent to it... I'm curious if I can add anything to to it to give it a bit of scent... Not into overly flowery scents... Any suggestions???
Most real shampoos either use the ingrediants included themselves (aloe for example), or they mix in Herbal Infusions, essential oils or fragrent oils.
Herbal Infusions are nothing more than herbs that are boiled for a really long time in order to concentrate them.
And essential oils/fragrant oils are pretty much just as stated.
The oils should be fairly safe to add, but they pack quite a punch. Don't add a whole lot.
As for the infusions, choose your herbs carefully if you go this route. Make sure they don't cause skin irritation, and I think my largest concern would be that they might cause eye irritation.
That said if you google for shampoo with essential oils/fragrant oils or herbal infusions you'll find a ton of recipies for human shampoo's. You can modify these recipies for just the scent mixture's and add it to your pups shampoo. Again I'd just caution you to make sure the mixture isn't going to be something that'll make your dog itch like crazy.
I would also like to note that what smells good in a bottle may not smell good on your dog the day after his bath. Just like with people the mix between the dogs natural scent and the shampoo scent can create something that smells aweful.
I don't really care much for the flowery scents that you typically see on dog shampoos. It's bad enough everyone thinks Vash looks like a girl, I don't want him smelling all lavender and rosey. The best shampoo scents I've found are from Earth bath. The 3 I can actually tollerate are the puppy bath (smells like cherries), Mango Tango (smells like fruit), and the Tea Tree Oil one (smells like a mens shampoo from American Crew).
The scents make the pup smell good for a few days and doesn't make me want to either dress Vash up in a skirt or give him another bath because he smells so aweful.
