After Neutering

Oberon was neutered last Thursday at a clinic our mobile vet recommended. He came home with an E-collar, which obviously was bothering him. So we took it off and made this Rube-Goldberg T-shirt contraption to cover the area so he couldn't get to it, and yet not make him crazy. We basically took 2 child's all-cotton T-shirts, which allowed air flow, put one on his head and front paws and one on his tail and rear paws and then tied an old sash around his waist, bringing the tie through his collar. It worked well, and the area is healing nicely. He did manage to step out of it a few times, but doesn't chew at or lick obsessively at himself.

The clinic said to keep the collar on for a week, but we're thinking since it is healing well and since he's not obsessing about it, would it be okay to just leave the T-shirts off unless he starts getting obsessive? I have a feeling the 7-day thing is kind of general for all dogs, not Oberon-specific.

For Jocu, he got to wear Callie's old panties that I used for her when she was older and couldn't always hold it. he never messed with the panties or his stitches....
he maybe wore them for 5 days- can't remember too well- that was last year...........
he doesn't seem to mark as much so that makes me happy....

I'm really hoping this will stop him from marking indoors. I really like taking him places, and can't if he marks inside. Outside, I don't care at all. He's only about 6.5 months, so hopefully we got to him early enough.

Nice idea! When I got Declin neutered at 8 months he too came home with a cone. I had to leave it on him for a week as well, but I took it off after three days and he was okay. It went back on for bed time or naps for the next two days, and after that we were done with it. I made sure to watch him at all times and if he started getting too close I would distract him, and if worst came to worst it went back on.

However, I feel like I need to add that he thought the cone was the greatest thing, especially outside. He thought I gave him his own personal snow scoop!!! :smile2:

Baker was neutered a week ago - at just over 9 months. I wanted to wait until 12 months but he was relentless at humping big brother Toby. Thankfully that behaviour has almost completely stopped.

Anyway - here he is in the inflatable collar we got so he wouldn't need to wear a cone. He doesn't mind it at all, can pretty much do anything he wants - with the exception of licking his stitches. We have been giving him time off from the collar now - he pretty much wears it when in his crate overnight & for daytime naps.

not really sure that the age matters. Jocu was over 2yrs when I got him neutered and his marking has decreased immensely.
Destin is 19 months and still tries to hump Cranberry.....
