Agility Weekend!

So much for the agility weekend...

"Whiner's Raffle" ... I like that...Didn't even get chocolate today <sob>...

It was a weekend of 'almosts'...I suppose that's better than a weekend of 'not a hope in hell'

Jumps will be the end of us...But at least he left the bars up today. Except in Gamblers...which cost us the Q...but he did the Gamble...missed the Q by ONE POINT! <insert favourites swear words here>....my fault...I was trying to be all fancy instead of just going for the straight and easy route. We decided that there should be mulligans in agility. You run the plan you think will work and if (when?) it doesn't you get to run the one that will work.

But I did get some video:
We started with standard, which was a mess (25 faults!). It ends abruptly so fortunately you don't get to see me beating my dog with a stick at the end (just kidding of course...he got his tug toy and cheese string).

No video of the Gamblers...which is a shame as I would have liked to hear the desperation in my voice as I screamed GO! TUNNEL! GO! at the end. To his credit, Clancy gave me a look of 'jeez, I'm not deaf y'know'...and zipped into the tunnel .

Then at the end of the day, Jumpers...well, by then it was just an expensive training lesson.

These are the first videos I've seen of myself running agility. Two things stand out for me. Wow, I look nonchalant when we go in the ring! How is that possible considering the butterflies in my stomach and the desperation in my brain as I realize I can't remember the first three obstacles of the course? :eek2: And second...I run funny

Very nice for only your second time out, Clancy run's very nicel and smooth and will only get better . check out the video of my Slow poke in good weekend (if Cosmo ever gets to a full run I think I will drop dead on the spot).LOL

Norah--those were great runs! Remind me again how long you've been trialing...?

From what I can tell, if you had been running USDAA Starters, both of those runs would have been Qs! (In starters weave pole entry misses aren't counted and neither are refusals!) So no need to feel bad. I think you guys looked great.

Thanks :) This was AAC so no refusals counted on the weaves (in Starters anyway). I'm still trying to figure out how I got to 25 faults! 5 for refusing the tire but I didn't even know I had faulted between the table & the double jump till I saw the judge's arm go up on the video. Still not sure what we did...the only thing I can think of was we left the table too early and got a non-completion (20 faults) but but but...we never leave the table early! We even stay for an additional heartbeat after we hear 'go' just in case.

The judge was very soft spoken so maybe I misheard her count....:( At first I thought she was signalling a refusal at the double jump but Clancy never went past the jump so it's not a refusal...right?

Sigh...so much to remember in my middle-aged brain

I counted the table 4 times from the video 3 times I got an early leave the 4th time It was Ok, depends on how quick she starts her count after the dog drops. It sure looks like she faulted the double from the video though. Sometimes you just can never figure it out. I had a fault at the last trail that I just couldn't figure out I was sure absolutely sure We had a clean run, I was like where did he fault so I approached the Judge for clarification at the end of the group she knew right away but checked the paper work came back & explained it, turned out to be a missed contact getting on the dog walk, we always look for the contacts comming off but a lot of times we miss getting on going up and I didn't even see it he just launched to far up the ramp getting on and missed the contact patch completely Very unusual for Cosmo it showed on the video though so no mistaking it ,I was to far ahead & half way down the walk to see the miss.

That's what I was going to ask about, because it looked like Clancy jumped up pretty high. Can't tell from the vid angle though. I know USDAA counts going up and going down (and they're TINY ZONES!!!), so was wondering if that's where you got some faults too.

Do you know if they count refusals for passing the line of the obstacle? i.e. how Clancy, um, went to the side of the tire?

Also, if you're ever curious and still there, always ask. It's amazing that the judges can remember who we are (scary too).

Overall, looks like some great runs. Clancy looked a bit confused in STD, but looked like he was having fun in Jumpers.

And if I may suggest one thing...and you know your dog best, so you can decide about this. When I first started, I used to back up when Koji wouldn't do something right (like weaves), but then I started realizing Koji wouldn't get into the correct position (you didn't seem to have issues with Clancy), or he'd take a jump backwards because now it was in front of him. Sooo...I learned to turn around, keep him on the side of me, and take the obstacle again. Granted, the only downside of this is when courses are tight and dodo brain takes the obstacle far away like he rarely does, lol. Just something to think about. Like I said, you know your dog best. It took me awhile to figure out HOW to get him to redo an obstacle, without taking it backwards. D'oh!

Aha! I've figured it out! I read the rule book last night. Well, not the whole thing but the relevant sections .

We had a 5 fault refusal at the double jump because although he didn't run past the jump, "a refusal requires backward motion of the dog's back feet against the normal flow required by the flow of the course. This means a dog spinning directly in front of an obstacle is incurring a refusal" ... so because we turned in a circle to go back and take the jump, we were SOL.

Then there was a 20 fault non-completion at the tire jump simply because it was the last obstacle so basically he crossed the finish line without completing the tire...That makes sense to me.

Contrary to the evidence, I'm really not obsessing about it! Really, I'm not. It's just being new I want to clarify the 'can' and 'can not' rules when they come up :wink2:. And it was bugging me to think I might have called him off the table before the count was up - now that's something I'm obsessed about :biggrin2:.

In AAC the teeter is the only contact where you have to hit the up and down contact - for the rest it's just the down so I wasn't worried about the dog walk.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm loving being able to get knowledgable comments & suggestions :smile2:

Ah, that makes sense. I hate those last obstacle rules, lol.

Oh, I'm sure you're not. Just like I didn't read all the AKC rules so I knew what I could and could not do. Uh-huh, I believe you.
