AKC Sanctioned A Match

Do you think a novice only match would attract people? I would like to hold one, but the rest of the board would rather do a novice only trial?

When I think back to my start in obedience, going to a match was my barometer of whether or not we were ready to enter a trial. Besides it was only a match and it didn't make me as nervous. Plus a ribbon, if we did well...

I think other than the cost of ribbons, there would not be much expense. We can use a local to play judge, no travel or fees!

It would actuallybe beneficial to hold a match for all classes, a dressed up show and go...!

Are you thinking of a Beginner Novice thru Novice match? Actually, is that legal? If so, you may pull in the entries to make a Match successful. At the Regional Qualifier in SC, there were 32 entries in Novice B, and 24 entries in Beginner Novice A and B. To really make this successful, I'd contact other trainers in your area and ask if you could drop in and talk about matches and then hand out flyers?

Just a thought, since I am always looking for show-n-goes and matches, can you run one with the novice class going first? I think, at least in my area, the Novice folks get tired of waiting HOURS for their turn while Utility and Open classes seem to go on forever. Most of our matches and show-n-goes are only two rings.

Is there a trial in your area where you could offer the match a few weeks prior?

Good thoughts Dani!

Yes, we would hold the match in September, just before the trials in October. I'll have to look it up to see if we can do BN in conjunction, since it is a lesser class, it seems logical we could.

We are going to offer Rally Novice too.

A couple of our members are aspiring to become judges, this could be an opportunity for their pre requisties.

There are three other schools/clubs in the area and they will advertise our event and I'm pretty excited about it. I've got support on the Board, thanks to many emails today and we are going to go with it.

I haven't forgotten how much that first match ribbon meant to me. I framed it. It inspired me to continue training.

When I started, Novice was always first! I always thought it was a bonus for the open/utility people to be able to sleep in a little later. :D Then the tables turned . . .

I wonder if the trial secretary would throw something at me if I suggest they change the order of classes for the second trial!

I think what you want is a B Match, not an A Match, unless you are a new baby-club. B matches take less work (no premium/catalog required).

I think a Novice-only trial is fabulous. We do one in agility, and we hire judges straight out of agility-judge-school. Like, we get an email of the ones who passed, and we hire them before they hit the plane :smile2: We always have a rep at that trial, and we don't start until 10 am.

Anyway, I'm sure there are matches in this area, but I haven't been to one in years. I'd rather spend my money and accidentally get a leg.

Thanks, I should probably be at AKC reading up on the requirements! A C match is a show and go, a B match for member clubs, and A match for new clubs... Whew!
