AnnaBelle's open wound update

First of all, I want to thank everyone for their prayers and all the kind wishes.

I took AnnaBelle to my sister's vet, as I am caring for sis and her family after a serious neck surgery a few weeks ago. So, I am not in my "home" area.

The vet didn't know what it was. Maybe a cyst, probably a cyst, but she was ambiguous and couldn't give me a clear answer. She gave me some antibiotic pills, and some doggie pain killers, and told me if it didn't clear up in two weeks to return, and we would discuss removing it. She said it was in a "good" area for surgery, and would be able to numb the wound area without putting Anna under, as this would not be safe for a dog her age.

She also told me to keep up the cleaning, warm compresses and antibacterial applications. The wound looked 100% better than on Saturday.

I also came home, gave Anna a pill, and went to sleep for the first time in two days.

I am not satisfied with her response. So, when the two weeks are up, I will be taking Anna to her usual vet...who knows her and who I am very comfortable with. I will have to leave my sister's overnight, but I think my mom can take over for a day or two...

I will be back on the forum later this morning, after I help get my sister's small children ready for school.

Would it be in poor taste to post a few pics of the wound in a album? I feel uneasy about this vet's diagnosis....

Again, thanks for your prayers and welcomes.

I can understand how you wouldn't be comfortable with her answer. It would not be in poor taste at all. I have posted of Gypsy's skin condition a few times this year and others have posted similar pics. It's easier for everyone to give advice when we know what it looks like. Praying she will feel better.

I'm probably going to say something stupid here but why can't you ask your mom for help now and take her as soon as possible to your own vet? If there was a way I could get her there I would, I wouldn't wait two weeks. I'm not trying to alarm you because I don't know anything about medical situations but it may not be just a cyst...what if it is some kind of skin cancer...do you really want to wait two weeks if you can possibly get away sooner? Or at least call your own vet and see what they think. Anyway, after I have given my dumb speech...I hope she gets to feeling better and I will for sure pray for her.

There don't seem to be a whole lot of options here. Let the body try to heal on it's own, with the antibiotics and care you have given it, or surgically remove it, and then let the body heal the incision. Either way, the dog ends up needing time to heal. I tend to not panic over this kind of thing. If you are seeing improvement with the current regimen, then keep it up, and watch it closely.

It can't be any worse than my friend who had wrist surgery that got infected down to the pins. They went in and cleaned it out good, then left it open and lightly covered to heal. It was gross, and he delighted in grossing me out by showing me the ligaments moving, but in three weeks it has mostly closed up. The body knows what needs done, it just needs time.

Did it look like this? Beckon had this, and it was benign.

Sadie has a cyst on her face that I'm having removed at some point soon. The vet said its benign but its started growing a lot bigger.

Milo, my parent's sheltie has a cyst on one of his back legs. I was grooming him when I found it. It looked like this small hole in his skin that had a scab on it. When my Mom took him to have it looked at the vet said it was nothing and showed her that you could squeeze something out of it (yuck :dead:), but that if it didn't bother him she might as well leave it, since it also is non cancerous.

I have been looking for my cable to transfer some pics to my computer. Sigh. Living out of a suitcase is tough, but I think it's here somewhere.

I am considering taking Anna to her regular vet's this week. I will have to coordinate it, it will take some doing....but I think I can get it done. I really took to heart David's comment about not waiting. However, I like the approach of giving her the antibiotics and see if there's improvement... so I guess I am kinda wishy-washy about it....the wound looks so much better than last weekend, and that point weighs in also.

Anna is doing well I think...she's happy (except, when she managed to separate the soft cheese from the pill three times, and I had to put it at the back of her throat - she pouted for two hours....she really can hold a grudge!) and eating well....sticking her rear up in the air and bowing-like...(I had to teach her that move...good thing I'm already considered crazy, if someone had seen that... well...) to play...for 13 she's very playful...

Let me see what tomorrow brings....if I feel she is sick or in pain at all, I will call Mom and head off towards "home"...or if the wound is still there in two weeks, I will take her to her regular vet's then...

I guess I made up my mind.
Thank you all for the support, and I will make an oowie album when I find the transfer cable for my camera.
