another UTI?!

I think my poor pup has yet another UTI. He is not drinking at all and "goes" 4 or 5 times when he's out. An article I read suggested that a protein rich diet could be the culprit. He is eating Innova EVO, which is very protein rich. Could this be the reason he's having so many problems?? If so, what's a good food alternative? :confused2::confused2:

I selected it after that dreadful pet food scare. I did a load of research and this one was in the top ratings for everything. :yes:
 
EVO is a very rich food. That could be contributing to your pup's problem, since high protein puts more stress on the kidneys. Chris' suggestion of Life's Abundance is a good one. There are also a number of other holistic foods that are excellent that you can consider, including Eagle Pack Holistic, other Innova lines of food (I believe they also make EVO) if you want to stick to the same manufacturer, Canidae, Solid Gold are just a few. They are all available through online pet sites like Waggintails.com or HeartyPet.com if you don't have a natural pet store in your area.

However, the not drinking is a major issue. He needs fluids, and I'd try to entice him with something like diluted chicken broth. A call to your vet would probably be in order as well.

I know the feeling of a pup not drinking enough. Try changing Pogos drinking dish. I know it sounds crazy but I had to change Kiaras dish 3 times and have finally found the dish she actually will drink from.:biggrin2: The first was just a regulat plastic type dog dish, then we changed to a stainless steel and finally to a small brown ceramic dish.:lol: Boy that was a pain let me tell ya. Try giving pogp ice cubes, Kia loved those. I give her about 1/2 cup of live cultured yogurt daily the yogurt has some fluids and the cultures help even out the bodiesbacteria levels.:winkgrin: Good luck and keep us up to date on Pogos progress.
 
I think your first course of action should be a check up at the vet, you don't want to mess around with possible kidney problems. Most likely it isn't anything big but better safe than sorry :smile2:

Smoke is a fussy drinker and we finally bought him one of the PetMate water fountains. It has a filter and constantly circulates the water through the filter, so it stays fresh and clean. I think he drinks twice as much now that he has the filtered water.

I think I would take him to the vet again as well or at least a urine sample for a test to see if he has another UTI. Changing the food to something that Chris or Ann has suggested is not a bad idea. It seems the more I learn about Shelties the more I find that they can not handle the high protein diets that other dogs can. I like Elaine's idea of trying a different water bowl too. My girls all have their own water bowl and they are all the same but for whatever reason they all drink out of one and only one!

Thanks everyone for the support and advise. I took him to the vet and surprisingly, he didn't have a UTI. At least that's a load off my mind. :)

Thanks Chris for the tip. I ordered a sample of Life's Abundance and it shipped today. Hopefully my lil' pupster will like it. :smile2:
