Are bones a natural sedative?

Yesterday morning, before our walk, I let Phebe chew on her bison bone for about 30 minutes. Normally, she's all revved up and it takes about 5-10 minutes to get her walking nicely on the lead. Yesterday she was calm from the moment I opened the door. Still happy to be out walking but so calm.

It isnt the bone its the chewing motion - chewing releases endorphins which have a calming effect on the dog. That's why dogs love chewing so much and why stressed dogs will do destructive chewing (helps relieve the anxiety).

I usually give mine a rawhide chew in the evenings to settle them down before bedtime and they happily sit together gnawing away quietly.
