are sheltie pups diggers?

My previous dog, not a Sheltie, would dig, and after some time I finally figured out that he was jealous of the time I spent on the computer. That's the only time he would dig. BYW, in his later years, when he no longer would dig, he WOULD eat dirt. I've never been able to figure that one out. Some deficiency in his diet, maybe?

Blithe Spirit, my first Sheltie, has never dug, but he sure makes up for it in other categories. He 'ate' his second TV remote this morning. Considering he has never tried to get on a chair, and hates heights, I'm still trying to figure out how he got it from the table top.

Good luck on the digging.

All of our girls harvest their own tomatoes. So this year, we planted our tomatoes outside of the dog fence. After the amount of tomatoes we wound up eating ourselves, I'm not sure about that decision either. :ick

Our girls are high energy. But Tara is also a snuggle puppy that just lives to cuddle with me when I am home. Clara is two and still digging.

Birch is a digger. He would dig to china if he was allow too. He only does it when he is bored and unsupervised like when he is playing in the play at his breeders house, usually with his sister who is also a digger.

He also used to be quite to chewer too still is but now he only chews on his things.

Both are quite common behaviors for dogs and usually can't be stopped just managed and trained to approxiate outlets. Most dogs properly trained and stimulated grow out of it.

That being said it is all prospective-Birch digs alot but he is nothing like my Beagle/JRT mix and Ember, Diva and Birch were chewers but nothing like my Lab. But looking back I can't barely remember them being naughty(even Birch) because it was such a small part of their life. I have a friend with a Lab and she always says so and so never did this as a puppy. Yes so and so did but it was 15 yrs ago, my friend was alot younger and the dog was an angel for 11 of its 14 yrs and she doesn't remember. I do however, ther previous dog was a demon as a puppy.

Lexi was the same way. She would only dig when she was out in the yard, and bored. I realized I couldn't really stop her when she was on her own--so I stopped allowing her out on her own so she couldn't practice the bad habit. She has since (mostly) grown out of it.

Little Jacks is 15 weeks and loves loves loves digging! He will stop mid play with his sister to dig, we filled the whole back in and off he went to dig it again! He's our 5 th sheltie, none of the other girls or boys dug:) we are trying to train him not to but it's really only the one spot so maybe let him go?

He also loves to chew! Things he has chewed so far:
The chair height adjustment knob
A crack in the floor boards
The hinge of the door
The door frame
Right through my headphones in two spots
Socks
Shoes
His puppy pad
The clip on his crate
His sisters bed
His bed
The cement between the pavers
The mop head
His food bowl!!
His sisters mane and tail!

None of the girls were chewers , and he seems to be getting better but we have had to redirect his attention a lot! All part of the fun !

Kyara never dug in her life, she simply doesn't understand the concept . My brother's dachshund is allowed to dig in a sandbox (this directs his need to dig to prevent him from digging in the garden or ripping out any grass). We sometimes hide toys or treats in the sand to get him to dig and it's hilarious to see Kyara stomping around trying to figure out how the dachshund is getting the treats to come out of the sand.

As for chewing, we taught Kyara really early to only chew her toys and not chew anything else in the house. That is one behavior I just wouldn't tolerate so we were really strict on watching her at all times when she was young and as soon as she would start chewing anything other than her toys, we would say a sharp no, remove the thing and give her one of her chew toys and when she would start chewing it we would say ''good girl!'' and get all happy and excited.

I wish we would have been better at preventing barking though !
