Aztec is getting fat.

It might be a case of getting older - he no longer has the metabolism of a young dog.

Deska has hit 13kg (28lb) again - I think its just because we haven't been walking so much in over a month because I have been so sick. So I am cutting out breakfast and going back to bones for breaky. But he is also moving toward 3yrs old (that's 28 in human years) so I do need to review his food intake for the longer term. I am not keen on switching him to a low fat food because we do flyball and agility. I would rather keep the protein levels up.

Other than labrador owners do other breed owners worry so much about dog weight?

I did not know about that :confused2:

Pumpkin didn't give my Setter stool issues....it worked really well to get a few pounds off of him, without making him crazy with hunger :-)

I could have this wrong....I just recall that folk here on the site were using pumkin for something - and not related to weight loss. I'm brain dead as to what it was for.

Pumpkin helps with loose stools, but I've also heard that it also works for constipation. All I know is that it was a god-send when Phebe had her poopy puppy episode. :uhoh:

Pumpkin can do double-duty. good for loose stools but also good for fiber-filling good stuff. I only recently started on the veggies with mine. They'd been getting a little pumpkin at dinner with a little less kibble than originally. I'd been told to add green beans but when I tried it, no go with my pups. I pup-sat in the summer and had one of those dogs on a very reduced kibble with frozen veggies- thanks to people here who mentioned frozen. accidentally dropped some on the floor and both mine thought that frozen anything was great stuff. so now, a little pumpkin, a little kibble and lots of frozen veggies for dinner.
just for the record- Callie has lost 10 lbs since I adopted her :smile2:

I use pumpkin in feeding the dogs and puppies to regulate stool consistency. So they get pumpkin if the stool is too loose OR too hard. This litter of pups hasn't had any problems with diarrhea or constipation (knock on wood), but they are behind in comparison to the schedule Emma set for weaning her puppies. Sasha is still nursing the pups and here we are at nearly 7 weeks old. Emma was always pretty much done with nursing at 5 weeks, and was pretty firm with her pups that the bar was CLOSED. LOL

Ok back on the weight loss topic. I've had to regulate Indy's diet quite a bit because he is not very active and has problems with CHF, thyroid, and arthritis. We've cut back on his kibble and supplement with green beans, carrots, and ....ice cubes. Indy acts like he's getting a really yummy treat when we give him ice.

Wow, that is fantastic. That's a huge amount for a sheltie to lose, its almost as much as Tully weighs!

thanks- Callie was a tad overweight when I first got her :wink2: We've worked really hard to get that weight off. She jumps on the couch now and moves much better :smile2:
