Bald spots on legs....what could it be!?

Oh wow I do hope it is a food allergy. My first thought was maybe Alopecia X like my Holly has. We just give her some melatonin and her hair seems to be coming back in slowly but it is growing. This is an unusual condition and not always dianosed at the onset. It just looks like Holly was experiencing male pattern baldness at first lol Healthy skin, but small patches of fur missing in weird places

Ok .. I am not a vet and I often have wierd ideas (SheltieMom will attest) ... I wonder if the hair loss could be in response to having too much of a certain vitamin or protein? Especially if the breeder was trying to "get rid of" the high protein diet they had for the nursing mom? I've heard of similar things happening in humans - but it takes a massive vitamin overload.

Yep, I think I stated that before, the treats added to the chow, equals high protein. When I see adds for shelties, the pups are trained on treats, not a good thing.

I got a kick out of a show I was watching on training, and the trainer spoke about treats. His statement was you can train with dog language instead of having an over-weight trained dog with treats. I trained with treats too, and I have cut wayyyyyyyy back. If you ever seen Old Mother Hubbard tiny bone treats, one is cut in half for two.

The latest school of thought on nutrition is that higher protein is better, and we're seeing lots of dog foods with protein way up in the high 20s and even 30s. Personally, I don't think it's a good thing. Too much protein overtaxes the kidneys and causes issues such as your pup's. Treats and extra human food complicate the problem so that could very well be what's causing Ginnie's issue, Barb. If it's just a food issue though, that's at least easy to correct once you get her home.

My dogs don't get regular doggie treats, except for one each night at bedtime. During the day when a treat is called for, I keep a little bowl of Mother Hubbard Wellness Light kibble on the counter and they each get a kibble. Trust me, they think it's a high value cookie! The kibbles are just big enough and since OMH is a baked food it's crunchy and makes good treats.

Great news that you can pick Ginnie up tomorrow! Can't wait to see some pictures and hear how she and Bacca bond. :biggrin2:
 
Congrats on picking up Ginnie Mae!! I was kind of pulling for her!! The thing that I thought of when you said small bald spots was hot spots. Marlie started getting them on her legs from licking but I quickly figured out that it was due to the fact that I had started adding yogurt to her food. I cut out the yogurt and she stopped licking the spots and the hair grew back. Hope things are going well!!
