Barking & Car Chasing--has anyone tried SpraySense Citronella Anti-Bark Collar?

Hello my 8 month sheltie un-neutered male is starting to bark more and more. Now it's at cars--from within my car.

I can usually tolerate it at home and say "Quiet!", but today when I took him for a ride in the back seat, he barked at EVERY car that whizzed by. This is brand new, but now that's he gotten started he won't stop. Since I was driving, there was nothing I could do except ignore him (he wants the attention) and thinks he's so tough (he'll think I'm egging him on if I acknowledge it).

The frightening thing is he really wants to chase cars when we're walking on lead--the faster the better. I have him sit every time a car goes by, but he still salivates over the speedy ones. By letting him bark at passing cars from within a car, I fear I'm encouraging the car obsession.

Has anyone tried SpraySense Citronella Anti-Bark Collar???? Is it safe? Is it a waste of $? Does it hear sheltie pitch (high or low)???

And no, we're not going NAAAAA...SCAR!

I prefer positive training methods myself, but there are times when the negative type is needed. I can't really help you much in this area, just wanted to say about positive training.
:uhoh:

My mom tried the Citronella collar on her Great Pyr. It worked like a charm at first but the big girl quickly got used to the smell of the citronella and was right back to barking. So for them it was a waste of $$...

For outside the car, I applaud your requiring him to sit. With Layla, I repeated "Leave it." in a stern but not "mean" voice as the car passed. For barking, it's the old "NO! NO BARK." in a deep, clipped tone.

Here are two ideas; either is used AFTER you've tried the vocal command without success. First, you could try putting a towel on his head every time he barks. Don't play with him, just cover his head in a matter of fact way. He won't like it, and by the time he extracts himself, the car should be past.

If he's in a crate, cover the crate. In fact, he just might be better off in a crate. Of course, I should talk; mine are rarely crated in the car. I know, I know. :uhoh:

OR get a spray bottle of water and add a drop or two of lavender floral essence (calming). Spritz him in a short burst and repeat "NO" in a deep tone.

My sheltie has never barked at anything when she is in the car but i have an SUV and when I take her she has to have the seats down in the back and she stands in between the 2 front seats so she can stare out the front window. She does want to chase vehicles (especially school buses and garbage trucks or anything diesel) when we are walking but I took her to Day camp at a training facility near where I live. They had us get a
"pinch collar". It doesn't hurt her it just puts pressure on her neck when she pulls or trys to go after a vehicle. It does make a world of difference on her disposition when she is walking and when I tell her that we are going for a walk she sits so I can put on her collar & leash she is a totally different dog.
Good luck
