Barking When Playing

Barking itself isn't necessarily a problem, but understand WHY the dog is barking and you may find a real problem that may need to be dealt with.

so what would you recommend if the dog was barking just for attention? :confused2:

Look at what is causing the barking, fix that, and the barking will also go away. So if the dog is barking for attention, why do they want attention?

Are they bored? You need to provide them with more mental stimulation (see the Bordome Busters post down the list in Off Topic)

Has barking "worked" in getting them what they wanted in the past? ie. If they bark, do you pet them, talk to them, give them what they want? If so, then you need to recondition the "asking" process. When they bark, and you think they want affection, give them a more appropriate action to do instead. Let's say you would be willing to accept that they rested their head on your lap if they wanted a scratch. So train that action separately, and then when they bark ask for the action, and reward accordingly. With time, the bark will fade out and they will go straight to the desired action when asking for affection.
 
:eek2:When my dogs are barking to much during play , i just go SShhhhhhhhhh.. sometimes it works ,, most time it does not.. lolol
 
I forgot Belle also barks when her kids are playing on the trampoline. she will stand under it and bark and try to bite their feet while they jump! she also loves to be on the trampoline with them. she digs at it and herds the kids by nipping their butts :lol: of course she is barking the whole time! its a good thing my neighbors dont complain!!!
 
I guess I'm lucky! Bacca rarely barks! And when he does its once or twice and a very low "ruff". No shrill yapping! (Timber's bark used send chills up my spine like nails on a blackboard).

Today he barked twice when he met a border collie at puppy school! It was so funny, it was like love at first sight! "Yey! Another herding dog! Someone who understands me! The other pups at school don't get it at all":lol:

My first Sheltie never barked. I think I heard him back 3 or 4 times in the too-short 7 years that I had with him. Each time, he would bark and then turn and run to me as if he scared himself! :lol: But he made up for not barking by "talking" all the time! When anyone got home, he would follow them around the house "telling them about his day" ... arr arr arr arrooo oooo oooww arr aooroo :lol:
