I have just got Jacobi and I don't think any one has taught him manners! He barks at every thing! He is 2 and a half and a good dog he just growls and barks at every one who comes to the house and he is not trying to be mean because as soon as they come in tail gos and he wants to play. Its just coming up to our house can now be intimidating because of Jacobi. I have taught Max not to bark when people arrive but with Jacobi he has been barking now. I don't know what to do any suggestions?

Take it to the basics. Start from scrath. Do you use clickers at all? Without a clear understanding of what he was already trained in, you just need to dive in and treat him like a puppy again.

One thing to keep in mind, since there is no way to know what his early life was like, you might have to overcome fear and lack of socialisation.

since he already knows how to bark teach him to " speak" on command and then " hush" command... but overall lots of shelties are barkers
you can also teach him low key comings and goings, organize couple of people and all of you keep coming and going while treating him when he quiet... I personally like that dog barks when strangers in the house, just want it to be controlled...

There is another current thread about barking at doorbells. Meggie does that where she is barking at people but her tail is wagging uncontrollably. It's like, "I want to play, I want to protect, I want to play, I want to protect." Like she can't really decide what she's supposed to do.

If you can figure out how to stop the behavior, please share. Sheltie's are big barkers.

The Sheltie Welcome is not what is the biggest problem. I am fine with the barking at welcome I am not fine with the growling and barking at every sound in or out of the house! He barks at every thing he barks at the wind the light the people walking down the street the kids talking in another room the sound of the phone the tv every thing!

I am so happy for all the suggestions and am going to take him back to the basics thank you all for the awesome advice!

I'm afraid that too is part of parcel of typical Sheltie barking! They each have their hang-ups. There are ways of dealing with it....not that I've been successful, but I believe others have!

These pups have stupid little quirks that just cause your eye's to roll.

The latest in my house? I'm a smoker, but I only smoke in limited rooms in my house. When I get up in the morning, I have a smoke in my bathroom, using the toilet as an ashtray. As soon as I toss the butt in the toilet, and Indy hears the "pfffft" sound, he goes into "Bacca attack mode"! Why? I've no idea. Just because, I guess.
