Benefit of a sheltie with a close shave?

After months of searching, we purchased the sheltie of our dreams yesterday. He's our 4th sheltie, and a handsome fella, purchased from a friendly and reputable breeder.

A curious question... he was nicely groomed the day before pickup, and I noted halfway home that his whiskers have been snipped off... something I've never seen in a sheltie. Is this typical?

Cooper came to me from rescue with his whiskers trimmed. I was taken back by it too. I didn't keep it up. I like the natural look better. I could be wrong, but I believe show dogs have trimmed whiskers.

The old "Sheltie Talk" shows exactly how to clip whiskers. I used to clip Neechee's when I showed him but let him grow out natural when he retired. Whiskers keep those little Sheltie noses into trouble, though!

Yes we keep the whiskers trimmed when showing them as it makes their face and muzzle nice and clean looking. Even the ones I dont show I like the clean look so I keep them all trimmed up.

I got Bailey professionally groomed when she was blowing her coat, and they cut off her whiskers... and I hated it! They were all pokey and grew back very pokey. They are almost back to the way they were, but I disliked it so much I'll be sure to tell them to leave them if I ever get her done again.
It's just personal preference, but she likes to nose me and I don't like to be poked!:eek2: LOL

I like the clean look but you just described why I don't cut the whiskers off the dog that are not being show. I hate the pokey nubs when they grow back in. Diva's grow so fast that they are back to that stage in 3 days after a show. I hate cutting them so I leave them grow. If only Diva's coat would grow as fast as her nails and her whiskers and then maybe they would stay trimmed for awhile.:rolleyes2:
