The weekend has come and gone... We didn't have a lot of activity in rescue, just one placement. But we rejoice in having just one! That means that one more sheltie has it's forever home. This week I will place my Mickey. He's been with us since May of 2011. He came in as a fear biter and has been in rehab ever since. We needed to find just the right family to even to consider adopting him. They found us! They did their meet and greet two weeks ago and were thrilled with this little man. He will go home with them on Friday. As always we tell them the good, the bad and the ugly about each dog we place. Knowing that this isn't their first "rodeo" and that their former sheltie Jake had a personality just like Mickey helped us make the right decision and allow them to adopt him. We have given them all of the cautionary instructions on how to handle Mickey in the first few weeks of his being home with them but they seem to be aware of what they are getting and are still willing to open their home to this little guy. He's as sweet as can be when he's on the floor but the crate to him is a punishment and a bad place so they will never be able to crate him comfortably. But with ten months of rehab and some good old fashioned obedience training and love he's come a long way. I'm certain that if they follow our guidelines with training and give him what he needs in exercise and attention this will be a completely successful adoption.

I'm still waiting for Lacey-Lou's PAL information to be sent back to me. We are working in a Rally signs class on Tuesday night. When we did our pattern last week my instructor (who is also a Rally judge) told me that we just Q'd with a 198 1/2 in points and this was only our second signs class out of the eight we are to attend. I'm really getting excited about how Lacey is being so attentive and follows directions perfectly. Even though mom has trouble with foot work and reading left from right at times...... She is on the ball ALL of the time looking to me to give her her commands and smiling all the way. I really think she's having fun! I know I am!

Every Sheltie has a special place in this world -- and Judy, you are brilliant at discovering the right one for each of your babies.

Congrats on the Rally -- isn't it a blast? :biggrin2:

That is so awesome- finding a new home for a special baby:yes:

And you and Lacey in rally- how much fun is that?:smile2:
that's great that you are doing so well in class- I need a class to learn the new signs......

Our rescues stay with us until they find their best matched home. Some of them have been in rescue for over a year but others come in and find their forever home in just a week or two. I had one little girl that came in on Monday, had her spay, inoculations and dental on Wednesday and was adopted on Thursday afternoon. It all depends on what our clients are looking for. Some of our aplicants have been waiting for over six months for just the right dog for them. Others seem to be less fussy and will choose from the group of dogs we suggest to them.
If a dog comes in with dangerous issues, whether it's fear biting or out of control behavior we keep them longer so we can work with them and train them to trust and to be more mannerly pups. We do take senior dogs as well. Most of them don't leave their foster families and pass on in foster care. They are loved and cared for and have all their medical needs met while they are just passing the time in foster care. We don't euthanize a dog just because it's old. That defeats the purpose of rescue in our eyes. There are times when it is necessary for medical reasons to help a dog who is suffering but those are few and far beweeen. Even so they are very sad days for us in rescue
