Carsickness

I have a male Sheltie pup, 7 mos. old, who gets carsick within 10 min. of being in the car. Since he's going to puppy classes and I want him responsive, I'd rather not drug him. I've heard abut giving him ginger snaps. Does anyone know how well this works, how far ahead, and how many to give? (He weighs 16.8 lbs.)

My 7 month old boy is also terribly car sick. As a result he hates the car, will shake and drool and always wees in the car too which I suspect is due to him being stressed and feeling very ill. I hate putting him in the car as he always pukes, even on very short journeys and he looks so miserable. I haven't found the answer for him yet either. I hoped he would grow out of it but that doesn't look like its gonna happen anytime soon. I would rather not drug him either so I would also welcome other options.

I have also heard about feeding ginger snaps but I haven't tried it myself.

Never tried ginger snaps. Our MacGreggor used to get terribly car sick, shaking, throwing up, and drooling. He would look like a Saint Bernard by the time we got to obedience class. We had to take a towel to dry him off before we went into class. When he was around 1 yr old he stopped getting sick and now he will jump right into the car and enjoys going places.

Ginger snaps is one option.

There are homeopathic drops you can give them as well. If you are interested I'll get the name brands and see if I can find a local supplier for you. I sell them at my store....they are hit and miss in my experience.

Many have success with Thundershirts - also works great for any kind of general anxiety - thunder, fireworks, separation, car .

We also sell a "calming collar" (again I'll have to get the brand for you...I'm having a blond moment). And calming treats. I have more faith in those.

Funny story (or maybe not so funny?) One of my customers bought the calming treat for her cat.....but bought the big dog version instead. She was ecstatic about the product....cat whetright to sleep....for hours....until she realized she brought the wrong product. At least we know it works And cat was fine.

I can't attest to the claims made in the attached link, but there is a conversation here on the Sheltie Forum that not only claims that the ginger snaps for car sickness thing works, but the thread also includes a recipe for making them at home.

A quick Google search on the subject didn't really yield results that I would hang my hat on. Those that said, "don't give them to you dog", mostly said so because of the sugar content in store bought ginger snaps. Makes sense. Those that said yes, mostly said that a vet or some other dog knowledgeable individual recommended it. You can judge for yourself. Most of these folks recommend breaking the cookie into small pieces and giving them like reward treats. Hope this is of some help.
