cattle dog woes

there is a red merle ACD that I see when hiking occasionally. sweetest guy, loves attention and belly rubs. And a friend had one; cowboy did nip strangers (and even her husband) but was oddly indifferent to Pico. He and Gavin did some run and chase games before he was sequestered due to his nipping a person.

But in general, they are a problematic breed (our fault, we bred them that way).

Thankfully I am able to keep Pico away from Roo as they don't move much playing fetch (and we do). I think a sonic blaster is probably safer for the next time we meet (and fun to use too!). hopefully the woman owner finds out what happened and is proactive.

If it were me and I had time I would try the blaster first then the spray.

This was going to be my suggestion... Def possible if you have a companion carrying the sonic blaster with you the spray. I think the ball tosser suggestion is a good one too, fashion a wrist sling for it so it can hang from your arm while at that beach.

That is always a problem with people and dogs in public places. You never know what will set one dog off against another. A smell, body posture?? A dog can be a "friendly" dog and plays well with other then suddenly something set it off and away we go. We were at a dog park once a long time ago,our dogs were on lead when all of a sudden this big dog came running and barking down the hill at us-- his people yelled "don't worry he's friendly" but as he got closer his teeth were barred and his ears back andhe was going for the smaller of the two dogs-- we had a big Irish setter at the time and he just lunged at the offending dog knocking him over and he bit him somewhere cause the dog yelped and took off. By then the people gotten to us and they apologized and said he never had done that before. I don't go to dog parks any more (tho I know most are really great and dogs love being with other dogs) I never trust anyone who lets there dog off lead in a public place tho again most times not problem- and always carry Halt and recently the sonic blaster. I don't want to hurt any dog either but there is no way in hellsbells I will let any dog attack mine again, at that point there are no boundaries for me. We used to go back packing a lot, with two dogs off lead but when we saw others on the trail we called ours back and snapped the lead on them.. Those dogs did not bother wild life other than an occasional, brief, ineffectual squirrel chase. We encountered range cattle, deer and even a bear and they stuck with us. But you never know. And as I learned once that Shelties can be spooked and when they are spooked they run- many lost Shelies result from that so we keep ours tethered.

I had a thought. On the chinese shop starting with T (not sure if it is banned in the US atm) there are these tiny little water guns. I was thinking of buying some and putting something bitter in them (or maybe vinegar) as protection.

that might work?? either vinegar or bitter apple-- and the price will be right...
