Charlie - Spinal Stroke

You probably should have started your own thread, your post would get more notice.

I would try to keep him quieter than usual and keep an eye on it. Its likely a bit of a strain and will go away. If the limping doesn't stop in a few days take him to the vet.

You're Melissa on both parts!! I'll do it right now, thank youuuuu

Oh dear I'm so sorry to hear about Charlie! A supplement you could try that helps fire up the nerves is ginkgo biloba. The vet prescribed this to maintain the spinal nerve defect that Romeo might have.

Keeping Charlie in our prayers!

Charlie Update

Hi Everyone,
Thank you for all the support. Charlie is doing better each day, he is trying to use his right rear leg to boost himself up instead of dragging. His rear left side seems to be the weakest at this time.
Charlie is very active and is at times stubborn too. He wants to do things on his own. Last night, we tried to give him some water, but he didn't want it that way. We have water in the kitchen for the other dogs. He got up and I say paddle his way out with his rear feet. When I noticed he was out drinking water. When he was done, he came back to his bed.
Before, he was hit with this stroke, he would meet me at the front door when I came home from work, he knows what time that is. Today, since his stroke he was at the front door and barking (I always said he was saying Hi to me). I know he is feeling better and he wants to do what he use to do on his own. If you go to try to pick him up, he will get up and run away and he can move.
We are still waiting to see if he is going to build the strength enough to use his rear legs again, or if he is going to need some help to get around.
I will try to update again soon.

Thanks for the update on Charlie. It sounds like he is doing very well.

That is so cool he wants to do things, on his own, that he used to do before his stroke.

I will continue to keep him in my prayers for that total recovery.

PS Isn't it something how these shelties "know time". Mally knows the exact time for his two mealtimes and will come and get me if I am a minute late!!

PPS Please give Charlie a hug from me.

Never heard of a spinal stroke gosh that had to be scary. I am happy Charlie is doing better, sounds like he will continue to improve too. Good for you Charlie, great news he is on his way to recovery. Doesn't sound like he is going to give up.

Yes Sable it was very scary. It happens so fast, one minute he was following me around as I was late that night coming home (him knowing the time) caused him to have some anxiety. So, when I arrived home, he pretty much followed me around the house. I sat down to eat, and he was right next to me, when we both went to get up, he couldn't get his rear legs up to even balance himself. If this happens to anyone elses sheltie, and I really hope it doesn't. Immediate attention is the best way for recovery. We didn't do the blood or x-rays as these test most likely would not show much, the vet started him right on medication, with a shot of pretizone, and an anti-biodic. It was a very good call to do. Today is two weeks and he really is like his normal self except his left rear leg doesn't have the strength it did. Today, he woke up and was lifting his rear up with his right rear leg and dragging the left rear leg. He will also stand up for about 4 mins with no help, little wobbly, but he does stand.
Ever since he came to us, he has been a inside sheltie. Not much for being outside, as I think the puppymill kept him outside. So, now he loves the comfort of being warm and being around us.

Looking back many years to when I was a child, we had a collie/shepherd that was my constant companion. One day, she was not able to move her back legs. This sounds so much like the spinal stroke. Unfortunately 40+ years ago, we were not able to do much for her and she died about a week later. I am so glad there is medicine and compassionate vets out there today who can help heal our little ones.
