chasing cars

It is definitely the wet roads that are setting off Bailey. She was fine yesterday and Monday. Tons of cars drove by and she showed no interest in them. However, today it is raining, so the roads are wet. She started lunging and barking at a few cars that drove by. Of course I corrected her by stopping and saying a firm "no". After that, I used "watch me" when a car passed and treated her when she immediately looked at me. By the end of our walk, she once again showed no interest in cars.

Yeah, it's like dogs digress sometimes?
Toffee was like that when I got back from my last trip, all of a sudden he was chasing cars on our road, I couldn't believe my eyes. Mixture of excitement and the wet pavement, like gorgeous Bailey!
Within one walk, coaxing and clicker training, he hasn't chased a CAR since... but as I have shared on other threads before, 18 wheelers on the highway different story, that he thinks IS his job still

I must say I do think there is a difference between dogs that chase cars and dogs that are excited about the movement (and noise). Tully goes silly around cars and it has been quite some work to get her focus, in the car she still goes nuts at passing cars. She is also a dog that is excited by balls and chasing rabbits - and the usual techniques of redirection work, like a gentle leader, look at me, treats and a ball (although she still slips up when excited).

But Deska's chasing is the scary kind - focused and silent. He doesnt get worked up, he just goes without any warning. Walking along the side of the road or crossing a road isnt a problem, but car parks, cars passing our home, any car he knows or motorcycles can set him off.

Up until TODAY when Judah ( 5 1/2) months would see a car he would just stop and sit. Not very many cars on our street. Infact hardly ever any cars park on our street.

Well just yeseterday I started walking with Kris to one of her lessons and we decided to take Mr. Puppy face. He was just naturally heeling . We were happy.

Then today we had to cross onto a street and there was mild traffic. One or two cars every few minutes. He lost it!! Like barking and pulling and when I tried to get his attention he spazzed on me!?! He has never even.

After that it didn't matter. Every single vehicle, coming or going he would just try to attack.

So I tried to walk him again, this time with Kris the entire time, to pick up Natalie from Kindergarden. It was like a 3 ring circus. Kris is almost a teen and like super sassy lippy chick, Nat is very cautious and concerned and Judah is apperently a car killer. No side walks here. So walking on the side of the road in the direction of on coming traffic.

It took 15 minutes to walk a ridiculousy short distance. Kris was now semi grounded, Nat a nervous wreck, Judah's poor little neck must have hurt from all that tugging on him to try and redirect him. As for me I was sooo irritated and worn out. AND SCARED. A couple times I though he was going to back out of his color and get hit by a vehicle.

WHO DO THESE DOGS THINK THEY ARE?

THanks for all the wonderful tips on this forum. I am soo glad to see that others are just as nuts for thier pets as we are . And also to have people to help me keep this wonderful guy happy and healthy and alive for a very long time.

Wish parenting were this easy.

I'm glad this thread was useful for you. Thank goodness shelties are so smart. It only took about a week or two to stop this behavior. All did was give her a stern "no" and kept on walking when she reacted to a car. When she didn't react, I praised her and gave her a treat. It didn't take long at all for her to catch on. She hasn't chase a car in about a month.

I posted a while ago concerning this issue. What I do now on walks is that if Sandstorm lunges or tries to chase cars I ignore him (safely ofcourse), also when I see a car coming I call him to me and he sits and gets a treat IF he does not react to the car. He is still figuring it out, but I see some improvement.
