Chiro--What to expect?

I am not a big supporter of chiro for people but with dogs it is totally different. While anatomically we have pretty much same amount of bones it carries differently and I think regular adjustments with regular massage just one more thing that will keep my dogs happy and healthy with no vet visits into old age. We never going to be serious competitors but I see waay to many dogs retire from agility by age 6-7... my goal to stay happy and healthy and do agility until respectable senior age:biggrin2:

I am sure they will make a believer out of you Ashely, When my family found out I was doing phisiotherepy with Storm, they all thought I had gone over the edge, but, I know how it has helped me as an athlete, so it was really easy for me to consider for her when I found out we had an certified animal phisiotherapy and rehabilitation specilest in town, and I am really glad I did. She is opening a new Clinic with a water TM in March and I am thinking of taking Cosmo in for a couple of workouts on it. He uses the my TM at home but she says the water TM really takes a lot of pressure off thier joints, may be we can shave those couple of pound of extra weight he seems to have picked up, Stormy is weighing in at 14lbs but Cosmo the little porker is 22.5 now and I would like him at around 20 max. When Income tax comes in I think I am going to get his thyroid checked just to make sure it's OK.

The vet/chiro I went to the other week told me depending on how "out" they are depends on the after "treatment".

So, for example, Koji wasn't out much so she said I didn't need to restrict anything and that I could even do agility that day right after if I wanted to.
For dogs that are more out or a lot, she'd say no agility, or even jumping depending on how bad it is.
But I think it depends on the practitioner. Not one of the 3 that I have been to has told me to restrict them physically.

Glad you liked it and I was going to say, seeing a chiro is a huge difference than a vet. Mostly because most chiros will get on the ground, let them sniff them, give them treats, and rub and massage them a bit and bam, they're all calm. I always wonder if Miko would like (or need) it. Granted, he hates being manhandled, even from me. And me he's used to.

I have to admit, Koji always seems more "bouncy" afterwards. lol.

Keep us posted on the patella.

So how did you go about finding a dog chiropractor? It might be good for Sca as he launches himself a LOT playing frisbee and even worse on the tennis ball. He doesn't seem worse for it but I wonder. His only thing is that he no longer rolls over, doing his broken chicken wing imitation instead. Though I think that is more he has gotten big and long compared to when he was a roll over master as a puppy.

We found ours through a recommendation.

I would maybe do a google search of animal chiropractor and your town and state and see if anything comes up. I chose to go to one that is also a DVM, but many do not go to one that is also a DVM.

You can also call your vet and see if they have any recommendations.

Also, ask around at your flyball community, they may be able to have a recommendation as well.

Great tips. I would ask around in the dog sport community as it's pretty well utilized by those people.

I also went with a chiro that was a DVM. There are several in the area, but that made me feel a bit more comfortable.
