I am new to sheltie grooming. can someone please tell me what this product is and where to get it and how to use it. I plan on showing my puppy in a few weeks and would appreciate any help I can get..

It's a thick conditioner - you can read about it here, and purchase it at Sally Hansen beauty supply or in the "ethnic" hair care section at Wal-Mart. You use it as the "base" when chalking a dog - rub the cholesterol into the hair, then pack in the chalk.

Can I ask, though - do you have someone to help you out at the upcoming show, like your puppy's breeder? Show grooming can be very intricate and involved, as I'm sure you're finding, and I feel terrible to think that you're having to figure it all out on your own.

I see that you're in Maine; are you doing the shows in Union over Labor Day? Maybe we can set you up with someone to groom next to, so that you're not all alone.

Thanks so much for the information. To be truthful, am not totally a novice at this thing. I used to breed and show Collies up in Canada 20 years ago. Had a long break from it but purchased a lovely little blue sheltie boy and I have decided to give it a try. It is a little intimidating. I went to a show here in Maine about a month ago and met some nice people. but boy, things have changed and there is a lot more involved in the grooming end than what we used to do years ago. I am just hoping I can keep up with this little guy in the ring. I am 20 years older to he heh heh..

Oh, I'm glad to hear that you have some background (and that you had a chance to go to a recent show). It's neat that you're coming from Collies - there is so much overlap in type, grooming, and presentation between the two breeds, so even if it's been a while since you were in the ring, I think you have a good foundation already.

Ohhh I probably saw you up there since we were showing but didnt know it!! I had a boy in the open sable classes and showed Bitch Special as well.

If you can get over to say Hi to Missjenneygirl and Tofupup(are you heading up?) You'll be delighted they are two of the nicest ladies with years of experience and tips!!!

You are too sweet! I will actually be up in CT for a road race on Labor Day (though 20k on asphalt in late summer is starting to seem a little daunting...!).

I'm not sure what Mom will be up to that weekend. But if she is there, ask for "Connie" and look for a little short lady with a great outfit.

I already found out how helpful Tofupup is. Are you talking about heading up to Canada? I now reside in Maine. When I bred and showed Collies, I did it under the Kennel name Bojans and we were mainly in Western Canada, Alberta and B.C. I have enter the Central Maiane, and the MidCoast shows here on Labor Day weekend...Should be fun.

re: ears

As I was looking through earlier posts, I noticed one where the lady was wanting to know what to do before going to a show {grooming, trimming, ears, etc..} Anyway, the suggestion was made that if you are showing a puppy, after the first day at the show, you have to redo the ears and then take them down next day... What kind of product do you use for this procedure? I was told by the breeder to use glue, in fact he had it in when I got him. I did get the proper stuff as well as the spray to remove it. As you probably know, it is terrible stuff to take out and don't know if I would want to put it in the night before a show. Is there something else that I could use. Would appreciate any feedback on this..Thanks.. Maflafajaaf

We use and recommend Japanese Yutokuban tape for ears, for a number of reasons (some of which you've already encountered!). It gives you more subtle control of the ear, and can be adjusted as the puppy grows, and doesn't need to be cut out like glue often does.

Here is a diagram of missjenneygirl's technique, which Lightplum was kind enough to upload years ago. It's great to be able to whip out the link when someone on the Forum has an ear question!

We start puppies in tapes around 8 weeks (after gluing the ears at around 5 weeks), and unless they're showing, they stay in tapes until they're a year old.

Thankyou very much for all the great information. I used to use moleskin on our Colllies ears years ago. Totally forgot about it. Didn't do it quite the same but will sure try this method. You have been so helpful and it is much appreciated. thks..
