So, Claussen is 9 months old now. He had his first hump victim back in August. He only does it with other people-never me or anything in the house. And it's only been 3 times. But he definitely has an interest in female dogs now. He will run off after other dogs and ignore me. I know that most people fix their dogs by 6 months of age, but I just wanted him to "grow a set" so to speak since he was such a pushover and would yelp if a dog ran too close to him. Now, he's actually put a few large dogs right on their backs in submission. But, I'm worried about his desire to run off after other dogs and mark everything-will this likely stop after he's fixed? Or is it something that once it gets turned on, it won't stop? I was going to wait until he is a year, and Little Bear is 9.5 months old. Little Bear is 7 months old now, and just lifted his leg for the first time to mark something. He watches and learns. He even hit his mark better than Claussen...Claussen just pees near something, or just right on the ground. Anyways...any advice of if I should neuter them sooner or anybody else that has preferred to wait would be appreciated!

Marking, humping, roaming and dog to dog aggression are all behaviors that are driven by hormones. Habits that hormones drive but they can be present in any dog. Neutering will only affect them so much. True that if they are neutered before the hormone surge they may not ever start them but they still might. The biggest effect will be on the roaming which goes down about 80% the others not so much 50%. The longer the behaviors go on , the less effect neutering will have on them. That being said when they are intact the longer they are left to go on without strating a training plan , the longer they will last.
Regardless of when you neuter start your boy on NILIF program, get a belly band if he marking in the house and put him on a leash when he is outdoors or use a long line for him to tow behind until his recall is solid. You need to stop these behaviors now depend on neutering to do it for you because it won't.

It is more of training issue but neutering will help some.
That's interesting because Mikos didn't try the humping until he was a year old and Brie arrived, and he only seemed to do it when she would run to get the soccer ball. He also didn't really start to lift his leg until recently, and he just barely brings his leg off the ground. He never yipped or ran from dogs but on the other hand he has also never engaged in rowdy play other than chasing. We had him neutered at 14 months and it took about a month to lose interest in Brie, and he doesn't fixate as much as before but I think that has more to do with training than hormones.
Yes I do need to train his recall more that's for sure. He has a thing for visitors where he will get behind them and groom them with his teeth like he grooms himself then he will start whining and stand up and try to mount their arm or back if they are sitting. He has this petrified look on his face like " oh no I don't know what's happening!" He doesn't mark in the house but he did mark at petco last time we were there. So, am I better off fixing him now? I like that he's developed a backbone with the hormones. He's not aggressive but he stands up for himself and makes dogs leave him alone if they get roudy or rude to him. Before he'd just run from the problem dogs.

That nibbling grooming thing. Stop that. That is the flirting before the mount for humping. My girls especially Diva would tell a boy off for that. "Masher!" *slap*
That's boys way of testing the water and see Hum how far can I go. When girls are in standing heat, they allow it , normally they don't. Some males will chew the coat right off a female with that behavior. Just an insight into what that grooming/nibbling thing means.
It is up to you if you decide to neuter him now. If it will make it easier for you to train him not to do these then go ahead. Alot of pet owners find it easier to manage neutered males. But be warned he is a adolescent boy, neutered to not. Dogs personalities change from when they are puppies to adults and likely many of the changes you are seeing in him are just him growing older and having more confidence. It is rare indeed for a puppy to stick up for itself against other dogs. Usually they yelp and get out of the way. The young puppy that stands and pushes back is usually going to be a handful unless trained properly. Alot of what you are experiencing is normal for all dogs.

I got Deska neutered a bit later, but I was really vigilant in deterring humping people or other dogs. And I must say he is really good nowadays. He occassionally forgets himself and will try to hump me or Tully (or my female relatives) when playing, but otherwise he is much better than most of the other dogs I know. He is allowed to hump soft toys though.
However he is a big time marker (outside) and once they get into that habit of marking, even when they are desexed, the usually still keep doing it.
