Collapsing trachea (my solution)

Katy has had a hacking cough for most of her life... scared the crap out of me at first, because my previous dog had died from congestive heart failure and had this same cough for her last year! But Katy's heart has always been good.

As she's gotten older her cough has gotten a little worse. Her lungs and heart are still fine, though, so process of elimination leads us to collapsing trachea. The vet couldn't really recommend anything for it, though; he said that, from his experience, none of the medication really helped.

For the last several months, though, I've been giving her 1/2 of a Benadryl, twice a day. I based this on the fact that I have a deviated septum (where the inside of my nose falls closed while I sleep), and Benadryl at bed has more or less stopped it.

Sure enough, her cough has 90% disappeared! It still happens some, but it's nowhere near as often or as dramatic!

She just had a vet visit on Friday, he confirmed that Benadryl is safer than anything he could prescribe and her blood work is all good.

Hopefully this information will help others :-)
