Collar question

Were going to pet smart later today, and we plan on getting an id tag for our new 6 month old sheltie puppy. Right now she isn't wearing a collar, so we are keeping a close eye on her. But I'm sure that someday she will get loose. At least until she is trained to have a solid recall. We already have a loop collar for leash walking, should she have a normal collar just for ID? Eventually we will microchip her as well. What collar do you recommend?

my girls haven't liked collars from day one...they grew fast in the neck so I wasn't gonna invest in a good one until they stopped growing. Kaleigh now has a rounded leather one that she doesn't seem to pitch a fit about, it is soft not rigid...Savannah is in thin nylon types as she doesn't like much but once she stops growing she will get a leather one as well. She is so petite boned and more fur than body anything but a thin type would look too huge. She is small...not even 12 lbs yet at 9 mths

My dog has two collars: one is a very small (3/8 inch) non-buckling martingale that never comes off and is JUST for her ID. Her tag is one of these; it slides on and doesn't rattle or jingle. The second is her buckle collar that we use for walks, obedience class, etc.; it comes off when she comes into the house.

I really like the slide-on tag, because it doesn't hang down and there are no moving parts that could fail. I also like that she ALWAYS has her ID on her, and I have the options of using her buckle collar, agility slip leash, or chain collar for "everything else".

She's also microchipped... I'd probably install Lo-Jack on her if I could. :wink2:

For a Sheltie, because their heads are narrower than their ears, I strongly recommend either a properly-fitted martingale or a chain or fabric "choke" (it sounds like this is the "loop" collar that you are already using).
