Coming in to front with dumbell...

He's sitting back further than I would like. I can reach it, but it is not the front position that I expect, and not what I get on a straight recall.

I don't like giving him a 2nd cue to come closer ~ it doesn't help him get it right the first time...

I guess I should take the recall out of it and have him front with the dumbell until that part is very good?

I'm having the same problem with Yogi - a hang over from his showing career when he was taught not to come in close. I've been doing a lot of work in a chair getting him to come in without me needing to bend over him. It's working for the recall which is a lot better but just sitting and holding the dumbell is still a new experience for him so even when I'm sitting in the chair he still sits out but I'm hopeful that it will come in time now his recall is better. I found the chair was better than the floor or propping myself against a wall as they both seemed to be counter-productive.

Chair work and 90 degree pivots into front have been what I have used first before I add in the recall.

Thanks, I'll start with the chair and ask for fronts. :)

Now to search posts about a dog that paces... is it back pain or lazy gait?

Coming into front with db

I've used both the chair and platform methods with good success. I did a lot of treat throwing between my legs with Dalton and Derrick in addition to the platforms. Sure they'd drop the DB to retrieve the treat but then they would retrieve the dumbbell and offer pretty fronts. In fact with Derrick, once he learned this method I had to setup an x-pen in front of my legs to prevent him from trying to stick the DB between my knees.
