Coronavirus (Corona) vaccination

Last week I took my 16 week puppy into the vet for her next set of vaccinations. I thought she was getting the distemper and rabies...when I got home and filed the paperwork I see that the distemper has a multiple of things other than the distemper vaccine. It also has the parvo, corona and lepto along with it. I know the vet had said there is a new reoccurrence of the parvo...but he didn't say anything about the corona. I now see in my book ("Sheltie Talk") that the corona vaccination is not recommended for shelties as it can cause skin problems.

I wanted to see if your shelties were given the Corona vaccination and did you see any side effects with their skin?
 
No I've never given the vaccine for it...especially since one it appears rare, and two it only seems to affect younger puppies under the 8 week range. I'd be more worried about the Lepto shot though...although since your puppy seems fine they maybe can tolerate it ok....I'd defiantly worry about how your vet operates of just willy nilly giving vaccines and not asking which ones or atleast telling you before hand which ones they are giving. I know mine tells me which ones when they come in the room..
 
I never give corona or Lepto because shelties can have a bad reaction to it. I'd call and talk to your vet and tell him your very unhappy with him risking your dogs lives.

If you explicitly told him not to give the corona and lepto before then I'd find a new vet, if you didn't I'd tell him that your unhappy with his knowledge of your breed and you'd be greatful if he didn't just give anything to your dog without your express permission from now on.
 
Here's our hospital's take on corona. Not saying its The One Truth or anything.

Corona is sometimes referred to as 'parvo's little brother' - often quickly fatal in debilitated pet store puppies, in healthy adults it gives you a few bad days - nasty diarrhea etc. and the animal ends up looking skinny and unthrifty. Not the sort of thing you want to happen to your show dog during show season, but rarely life threatening. Think rotavirus or Norwalk in people.

It is a very difficult diagnosis to confirm. As far as I know (and I could stand corrected) the only sure diagnosis is intestinal biopsy, generally done post mortem. So lots of times we suspect corona, but we are rarely sure.

Bottom line - it is reasonable to give to pet store puppies, it is a reasonable thought for dogs who will be starting out on a show or trial circuit where they will have a lot of exposure. It is anything but a core vaccine for us - I doubt I give 10 doses a year, and would have to check to see if we actually have any in stock at the moment. Dr. Mac
 
The reason the vet gave for giving the parvo was that there have been several new cases in the area...He said it was something that sort of disappeared for years and is on the rise again.

He also said it is something that dogs can pass onto humans..
 
I had to look to see what I gave puppies. It's Intervet Progard 5. It contains Canine Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus. So no, my dogs don't get Corona.

I did find that Intervet has a distemper/parvo only shot. I just don't need 25 of them! Wonder if they come individually.
 
Parvo has a very high death rate, so it is definitely something you would want to vaccinate your dog against.

From what I've researched, coronavirus is rarely fatal and most adult dogs are back to normal after a few days. My dog was never vaccinated for it and I believe she is just getting over this virus. It is not something I would ever want her to go through again. This weekend will be 3 weeks since she first became symptomatic and she is still not 100% better. There is nothing scarier than seeing your dog listless, refusing to eat and pooping nothing, but blood. My parents' dogs also picked up this virus from her, but were better within a week. From what I read and I'd love to be wrong, maybe Dr. Mac or Dr. Shelli will correct me, but even if a dog has already had coronavirus, they can still get it again. The immunity doesn't last long? If this is true, I am going to consider getting Bailey vaccinated in a few months.
