Costco has some really nice memory foam bath mats, 24x36, that fit nicely in the bottom of a large crate. That's a larger crate than most of us with Shelties would use for travel, unless you crate 2 dogs together, but I use this size crate in the house since Phebe is crated when we are gone.
They're 7/8" thick, so they provide a nice cushioned surface for your dog, and are machine washable and can be dried on low. The best part is the price -- $13.49. I saw the same thing at Bed Bath & Beyond today for almost $30.
