Course hair..

My boys have course hair on their "bloomers" or "pants" and it tangles extremely easy. I've tried a leave in conditioner and I brush it almost ever day. Do y'all have any suggestions?

Melli and Cubby have it too and my 3 Aussies had that.

I used to do bum cuts on my Aussies and just trim it to a short maybe 1 length from time to time. With Melli & Cubby I just brush with undercoat rake.

What do you mean by coarse hair? Be definition, Shelties are supposed to have coarse outer hair.

Is their dry skin associated with if? It should feel a little dry to the touch, the the undercoat should be soft. And no skin flakes.

Tweezers....

Seriously, I take a pair of tweezers and run it through to get the worst snarls out without having to grab like five at a time, and then I just use the pin brush or rake... It's nice because they can get further into the coarse hair as well, so I don't have to do the line thing with it, which never really seems to work to well anyway.

Tweezers are also good for when Honey is doing the worst of her "puffs", they seem to pull them out a little gentler.

Much to my husbands dismay, my favorite time to work over her coat with them is when we're on the way home from somewhere and she's all excited about the wind from the car window. I just tell him she's helping him since he loves cleaning his car so much!

I think coarse is more like the term cottony. Not long and silky like the rest, it's more cottony than everywhere else. Harder to comb through. Almost sticky.

Leave in conditioner can leave residue as I've found to by chagrin and makes the coat stickier.

Ive now gone back to mostly pure water when brushing out. Unless Indy has rolled into something stinky. Then I use leave in and back to the groomer ASAP

With Barb on this one~

I used to use IOD lush coat spray in detangler, but I found even diluted it was making the boys have residue in the coat.
I only use warm water spray bottle to spritz the coat. A rake, pin brush, and a stainless comb, for maintenance. And use a boar brush to finish off the coat.

However...with that said, the sheltie coat is to be course, not soft & silky. Even though it may look more appealing, and feel better to the touch.

I consider my Trapp to be on target with standard for coat texture, it is coarse & stand offish, as it should be.
My Jasper's coat is very pretty, it flows & bounces when he plays, and is really nice to look at, but defineatly not to standard his whole coat. He is a bit coarse in the pants area, and that is fine with me.
And our Mia, is no where's to standard of coat texture (double merle) her coat is very silk spun like in texture, and is the worst here for shedding.
(Imagine angel hair, like you use on your Christmas tree) that is the texture of her coat.
I use no conditioners after bathing, as it will weight the coat & leave residue.
