CPE Question

Okay, I'm not someone who competes in CPE, but one of my young dogs has decided she is okay with a teeter everywhere *except* at a trial. So, of course there's no easy way for me to fix it when I can't make her do the teeter at an AKC trial, and she is okay with every teeter I present her with at any training facility.
I had heard in the past CPE allowed people to take an NQ, go get their leash, and complete a few obstacles. I was wondering if this was still true. I'm thinking about entering her in a trial FEO just so I can go out there and help her get over her problem with the teeter in trial settings. I'm asking if this still holds true, as someone I discussed it with at the last trial told me they thought this was no longer allowed, so I thought I'd check in here, and see if anyone (Silaria)? might know.

At our last CPE trial in June, the judge allowed a few of the handlers to get their leash and take their dog over a few obstacles, jumps - not sure about contacts, so the dog could leave the ring on a positive note.

Its possible this is a "judges discretion" option.

One thing about CPE and their FEO runs; it costs the same to run FEO as it does to actually run CPE for Q's. Its why we are running CJ for Q's and not FEO in the venue. Just something to consider.

Another thing to look at - ASCA trials (http://www.asca.org/programs/agility). I've been told you are allowed to train in the ring at those trials. You NQ obviously, but you can train.

My question is why she is refusing the teeter at trials? Is she nervous or catching on your nervousness? Dogs can feel our feelings.

I've never heard of a COMPETING dog being able to do that, I think FEO you can. Someone correct me if I'm wrong :D

No, not me being nervous. I'm definitely not :) I've run several dogs for several years now, and before that, showed horses for 15 years, so I think I'm pretty immune to that by now, unless I'm at something like a national.
I think it is a lack of confidence on the teeter in that particular environment. Nothing can truly duplicate a trial setting.
It sounds like then I'd need to email a particular trial and ask if I'd be able to do that. I'm not too worried about doing FEO vs regular runs for Qs. Just like when I did the NADAC trial, I'm never going to do the venue beyond as a training opportunity, so I'm not concerned with titling in those venues. I can only really afford to be competitive in one venue.
Shame there aren't more of the ASCA trials. That would probably fit exactly what I'm after for Ember to get in the ring and get on the teeter. The only one close enough to me to go to is the same weekend I'm in Dayton for an AKC trial

Hmmm... I wonder why she does the teeter in classes and runs and not trials. Obviously, it's not EXACTLY the same as a trial, but you would think it would be pretty close. :confused2:

I was going to suggest ASCA also, bummer about there not being anything close by. And too bad it's the teeter (as you know NADAC doesn't have them, but you can train in the ring).

I say, if you see a premium, contact the trial secretary. If they're not sure, either ask them to contact the judge, or ask if you can contact them yourself to ask if they'd be willing to allow that.

I know at the CPE trial we just did, I saw a lot of people train one aspect and then run off (happy ending). I saw one lady's dog so scared of the first jump, she got the leash on and the judge said, "go over a few jumps on your way out, end on a positive note". I actually saw her do that a few times, and she was the "more strict" judge.

IMHO, if it's one thing, and the judge knows you're going to work one thing, I think they may allow it. Because it won't take up a lot of time. Heck, one woman set-up her dog in front of the DW (it wasn't the first obstacle), did it and walked off. The point is, I think if it's faster than a typical run, they may allow it.

Good luck. Also, I'd also be wondering why she's not doing the teeter either. Do you guys have show and go's around? Those would help too. Trial-like atmosphere, cheaper, and any training you want.

Yep, we do have show n gos. We do those, and run thrus whenever possible. It just doesn't seem to have the same effect as the show atmosphere though. At home, or run thrus/show n gos, she has no trouble. I really do think the trial setting is just much more overwhelming,

Wow!! Okay, that kinda sucks. Hope this situation gets figured out FAST! BTW, I had the same issue with the a-frame/dw, but I was also doing only NADAC so that helped a lot.

Good luck.

I'm not experienced, so don't take my word TOO closely

Maybe if you act like the run-thru is a trial...like getting up early (ugh, torture ) and packing an EZ-UP or chairs and coolers, that maybe she would think it was a trial. Of course, it might not work. You must be frustrated.:o
