Cryptic blue

wonder what's up with the reddish-rusty cast...

I don't know anything about the graying, but the rusting is pretty common for black dogs, especially in the summer months. It's the same as how humans' hair lightens a bit if they spend a lot of time in the sun.

Missy's half sister is a maltese blue. As a puppy she looked like a slate grey and white, but as an adult, her coat looks more brown. I've seen her in person and it's very obvious she's dilute. She's very pretty! That other dog looks like he's just spend a lot of time in the sun and it's lightened his coat dramatically.

This dog is obviously a dilute, because the nose and eye pigments match the color. It's harder to spot when the nose and eye pigments are black.

Yes, some black dogs rust. Thankfully, mine don't. They can be out all day long and not rust. Liesl rusted as a puppy, but she is half "not family" and her "not family" half is known for rusting. As an adult, she has never rusted. Marque and Evie have never had a rusty hair on them.
