Cushing's Disease

Randy was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease yesterday, pituitary dependent. He will begin Anipryl as soon as it comes in. Any comments on what to expect with Cushing's? His main symptoms have been weight gain, lethargy, extreme hunger, thirst, weakness. He is almost 10 years old. His ALK was continually elevated and a good liver work-up didn't reveal the cause. Vet suspected Cushing's and that's why we did the testing. Did a Low Dose Dex Suppression and the Dex Suppression (can't remember what it was called).

Very sorry to hear of Randy's problem.
Cushing's is a very complex situation, while not the most threatening condition it can be challenging to treat.
There have been several threads on this and the related forums about people's experiences in dealing with this disease.
I think the reason there was not that much initial response is your reference to Anipryl for treatment. That is not the most common form of treatment and probably most readers here would not be familiar enough with that medication to feel comfortable commenting. -Dr. Mac

Dr. Mac, Thanks for your reply. What are your thoughts on Anipryl?

I can't really speak to that as I currently only have one patient on Anipryl, and that because it is a very geriatric dog who also suffers from Cognitive Syndrome, the other condition Anipryl was designed to treat.

I would not be comfortable interfering with your veterinarian's handling of the case, and only mentioned it because your post was not generating much response, probably because most owners of Cushingoid dogs would be more familiar with Lysodren or trilostane. - Dr. Mac

I had a Sheltie who was diagnosed w/Cushings when she was 6. She was successfully managed w/Anipryl for 8 years, until her death at age 14 of unrelated causes. This was back in the late 90s. The Anipryl didn't produce any side effects.

Here's wishing you and your Sheltie much success in his treatment, and many happy, healthy years ahead!

I have no experience with Cushings Disease, but please know that I am thinking about you all and hope that his condition can be controlled with the right medications.
