Digging

Anyone got any good solutions for digging?

I can't really let Beignet play outside too much because she tears into the yard with ferocity. Especially around my trees. If I turn my back for too long, she makes a big hole fast.

I am debating making her a dig box to see if she will stick to digging in that, anyone got any other ideas?

I am sorry I don't have an answer. But I can sympathize. Shelby did this too when she was a pup but did outgrow it for the most part. She still loves to dig when we go camping. Especially in the sand. Maybe a digging box would be a good idea.

Young dogs love the feel and texture of digging - part of investigating their world, if they were wild dogs they would be digging to hide their food so it's a natural thing for them to do. Most dogs grow out of it.

Best solution is to give her somewhere she can dig - either a sand/dirt box or enclose a section of the garden. Hide toys and treats in the box/area you want her to dig so she gets the idea that's her spot - and it makes it fun. I made a sand box using a large flattish container and kept it on the back porch for my two.

My Angel Cookie did that. Her breeder had a concrete patio that was fenced from the rest of the yard, and in that patio was one yew bush in a cut out. The puppies had their outdoor time there, and every day the breeder had to replant the yew. So, Cookie had lots of digging experience when we brought her home. It was a problem for about a year, but we always told her firmly 'no', and eventually she outgrew it. Of all of my shelties, she's the only one who was a digger. The others had their own unique 'crazies'. I think time will fix your pup's love of digging.
