Doesn't Have Papers??

I know you need papers to show a dog...but he doesn't have any?
How much would you say would it cost for me to have all that done in order for me to put him in shows, and what is the process like? I've been thinking about doing it because I think it would be a lot of fun, and plus my Mom did it, and I'd like to kinda carry that out in honor of her. But if it's going to be a pain in my butt...I'll just get him trained in Agility and Flyball, and all that sorta stuff! Either way, I'd like to participate in SOMETHING with him!! He's a handsome man...and he loves to be outside running around! So I may have a shot in both departments if I choose to! :smile2:
 
TaraLynn, did you get your pup from a breeder or somewhere else. If you know any of the parents or the breeders name you can check the AKC site for papers. The papers they need will include the sire and dam info and that is basically what you will need. If the breeder never registered your pup you may have some trouble obtaining papers for him. I have rescues so most of them are not papered, but they can compete in agility and Flyball without being papered, The registration fee for my one dog who is papered was 25.00 with the AKC

The lady I got him from I know is a breeder...she's just not a "registered" breeder...in other words she's a "backyard breeder" So 'm not 100% sure if she has papers for the sire and dam...but she does own them. I suppose I'd have to contact her for that info! In order for Caliber to get papers, would his Mom and Dad need to have them and be registered? I mean...I don't want to ge the breeder in "trouble" so to speak for not being registered...she's very nice, and we're in contact all the time. I'd hate for anything to happen!!
 
TaraLynn I do believe her parents need to be papered and registered before they will register the litter. I would ask her if the sire and dam are. If they aren't then you may want to contact the AKC to see if you might be able to get yours papered. I know the ones I have could not be papered since they were puppy mill puppies or byb stock. The AKC told me because parents were never registered they could not register them
 
I have rescued dogs Tara and none of mine have papers so I am getting PAL/ILP numbers for my dogs. The only thing that is required is to show documentation that the dog is spayed or neutered in order to obtain these numbers (that prevents any breeding on the competition registration numbers) Go to AKC.com and look for what they call PAL/ILP second chance registration and download the form. They do ask that pictures of the dog be sent with the application and the $35 fee charged for the application is non refundable.

Not only can you do agility and fly ball but you can also show in obedience with these numbers. The only thing you cannot do is conformation
 
Yup, Gio doesn't have papers so I got him his PEN (Performance Event Number), basically the CKC version of the AKC ILP. They required proof of spay/neuter, CKC-approved microchip, and photos signed by his vet saying that he looks and acts like a Sheltie. The PEN, or ILP for AKC, allows him to compete in any CKC (AKC) trials other than conformation.

Plus, there are loads of organizations that will take unregistered dogs. If you are wanting to do obedience-type stuff, check out APDT for Rally-O (I prefer their Rally-O over the CKC/AKC version anyways!).
 
Callie has an ILP/PAL number- we're hoping to compete in rally someday. It's not a big deal to apply and it comes pretty quickly (at least, I thought so). You can register any dog that looks a lot like a specific breed so since Callie is a sheltie and looks like a sheltie- no problem.
