Not sure if anyone has had this issue with their sheltie...but after over one year of vet bills and many different premium foods of all proteins & carbs...I finally figured out that my sheltie is allergic to grain - even a cracker will
make him sick. I stumbled on Natural Balance limited ingredient diet w/sweet potatoes instead of grain.... He's done remarkably well...My vet was
really never able to help me, except for ordering one expensive test after the other....Just thought I'd share....

Thank-you for sharing.

Wow, that is very interesting. Our puppy has had several stomach issues too. I think we finally figured out that she is allergic to chicken. But we went through a lot of tests, too, before we found it.

Completely normal, since dogs are not set up to digest grain to begin with. It's unfortunate that your dog has a worse reaction than most. Most dogs just have recurring skin problems, immune system problems, constant diarrhea, etc.

I'm glad you found something he can eat, and you can always add fresh animal protein to it, eggs and yogurt and meat.

I have one that is Chicken sensitive, but only to raw chicken.

Welcome to Sheltie Nation!
Glad you have found a food that works,as I know only to well what it is to have a dog with allergies. Our lab Earnhardt is allergic to corn, wheat.

Hi welcome,
I know several dogs that are gluten intolerant, shelties and others. Is is quite easy to control once the problem is recognised. I've come across a few that cannot digest chicken too. Looking forward to hearing more about your sheltie:smile2:

I feel your pain.

from 4-6 months of age, my Bailey had chronic diarrhea. The only thing that helped her was prescription diet ID canned food. On my own trial and error food experiment, I figured out that Bailey was allergic to chicken. I put her on california natural lamb and rice kibble. She was good for over 6 months. In June, she picked up a stomach virus and was having on and off diarrhea again. After numerous normal / negative tests and the vet saying she has a sensitive stomach, not enough good bacteria, try another awful prescription food, get more tests...I dewormed her on my own, (despite the vet refusing to prescribe one) and it did the trick. ::knock on wood:: she has been feeling better.

Only you know your dog and sometimes you have to go with your gut instinct. I'm glad you figured out the cause of your dog's stomach problem and she is all better now.
