ear gluing

First attempt today at gluing Casey's ears did not go well. The glue the breeder put on came off last week so I ordered stuff from Mel's Wickets. I combed up the hair in front of his ears and tried to glue hair on the ear tip to this but he really doesn't have any hair on his ear tip long enough to glue it to anything. Looking at the ear, you have the leather where there is no hair, then he has a little hair on the very inside tip of the ears. I don't think I am supposed to glue to this, am I? It's just hair on hair. He is 10 weeks old. when the glue came off, one ear was still a little tipped but falling off to the side. The other ear was pretty much skyward. Trying to glue the ears together on the top of the head was a disaster and I just took the glue off that area for now. I've watch video. If he had enough hair on the tip of the ear I think I "might" be able to glue them down. I really have no clue how to glue them on top of his head.

You want to glue the bit of hair in front of his ear to the hair on the outside tip of his ear, not the inside. There usually isn't enough hair there as you've found, and you don't want to glue to the skin.

Just fold the ear down over your finger and press the finger tip with the glue on it through the hair in front of the ear to the outside tip of the ear. Be careful not to use too much or it will be tough to get off. Better to use to little and redo sooner than make the puppy nuts. Eventually you'll find what the right amount is that works for your dog.

Good luck! It's awkward, but once you get the hang of it, it will go smoothly. I wouldn't worry about gluing them together at this point...just work on getting the tips done for now.

Ann, I think a "light" just went on for me. Thank you so much for your reply. Gonna unglue tonight and start over again.

Do you live anywhere close to your breeder? Granite's breeder has had me come out a few times to take care of his ears and she taught me how to do it. There's many different methods as well. What has worked best for us is when she taped them up with moleskin, adhesive spray and ear glue. It's a longer process but it gives great results.

If your breeder isn't close, do you have a Sheltie club in your area? I bet that there are people there that could help you too.

Good luck!
