Ear infection

Bailey has a mild ear infection in one of her ears.

I brought her to the vet yesterday morning. They examined her hers, flushed them out and cleaned them. I heard her cry from the back room :(. The vet sent us home with medicated ear drops and and a cleaner to use one a week after her infection clears up.

I just wanted to post this as a reminder to everyone to check your dog's ears. I have to admit that ears are something I've overlooked. I'm good at staying on top of nails, brushing teeth, grooming, but I only checked bailey's ears after a bath. And she only gets a bath every few months.

I just randomly decided to look at her ears on Thursday. I don't know why. She was snooping in the bathroom when I was cleaning my ears, so I decided to check hers. One was ok, but the other had a lot of dirty brown wax.

I didnt think much of it, but I checked it again the next day and noticed it looked a little red as well. She wasn't excessively scratching or rubbing her ears, so I wasn't sure if it was an infection or maybe I irritated it from cleaning them the day before.

I know ear infections can be painful, so I made an appointment yesterday morning. I'm glad I did because it was infected from a build up of wax and dirt. We caught it early on, so that's why she wasn't too bothered by it.

So don't forget to check those ears!

Praying for Bailey's ear infection to heal up quickly.

Thanks for the advice for us to be sure to check our dog's ears.

Note: Don says to smell them periodically, if they are scratching them.
If they smell bad there is usually an infection. I do not know where he
heard to do this, but it makes sense.

I read about smelling the ears. A foul odor is an indication of an infection. I think when it smells it means they have a yeast infection. I did smell her ears, but they smelled normal.

They can also get ear infections from food allergies or ear mites. Bailey has an infection in just one ear, so it's not allergies or mites.

Her symptoms were redness and dirty brown wax.

Thanks for the reminder, Randi...I don't look at ears often either and I should. Glad you caught this before it really bothered her. I hope it clears up quickly!

Poor Bailey...I am imagine it must have been awful for you to hear her cry from another room. They don't understand when they have to get a little hurt to get better .

Here's hoping she gets better quickly :fl

Poor Bailey girl! I am sorry that she has an ear infection.

The smelly ears is from a yeast infection. It sounds like Bailey has a bacterial infection.

I hope that she feels better soon.

awww poor Bailey! Hope her ears feel better soon!!

Ive become rather OCD about ears since Six had issues with his, although we've come to the conclusion it was food related as now 3 months switched off and they are better! His were red and yucky too:ick

My kids (including the foster dogs) get holistic ear wash solution once a month. I have not had an ear infection in any of the dogs I use this solution on. When a new dog comes in usually on bad food and not getting the proper care they usually suffer from chronic ear infections. But it only takes a few treatments and they are no longer suffering. On occasion we do have the vet irrigate the ears when they are under anesthesia if the ears are full of dirty wax but that has only happened a couple of times.

What ear wash do you use?

The one I used to use with my Setter was this:
  • 2 cups (1 pt.) 70% Isopropyl alcohol (don’t use the 91% solution, it is too strong for use in an ear cleaner and can physically burn the delicate ear tissues) or you can use witch hazel instead which might not burn the ear.
  • 4 Tablespoons boric acid powder
  • 16 drops of 1% gentian violet solution or 8 drops of 2% gentian violet solution. (Order from your local pharmacist)

The gentian violet really stains though, so if you use it, be very careful with it! It stains everything it touches!

This stuff really kept his ears clean and free from fungal and bacterial infections.

Important....don't use this if your dogs ear is already infected, as this solution will burn infected ears! That would really really hurt them.
