Ear inflammation recurring

It was just last year...it worked really well and gets you out of having to do constant ear baths/applications some of which can irritate the ear. Claro is effective for 30 days against yeast and bacterial infections in the ear and we didn't have to have a repeat application at the end of the 30 days.

ahh- so likely it wasn't around when Callie had all her ear issues.....

My last non Sheltie was a Cocker, she had a LOT of ear infections. First question, does it have a yeasty smell? You know when your making bread and you start your yeast in water to activate it? That’s what a yeast infection smells like. Also causes much head shaking and ear scratching. As Trini asked did your vet take a swab of ear canal? They need to know the type of bacteria in order to treat it with the correct antibiotic.
As I recall my last Sheltie Riley had an ear infection from a tick bite, wasn’t in his lower ear canal though. Think he was given a cream antibiotic for it, cleared it right up.
yes- Callie started with recurring yeast infections and had an inner ear infection and then some bacterial issues......
you definitely need to know what the culprit is so you can treat correctly.....

My Ruffles gets brown waxy buildup in her ears too, which frequently creates a yeast infection. Part of it is due to the fact that her roommate Flurry loves to lick her ears! My vet has me do a 14-day run of Momentamax (available from your vet) once a day and that clears it up. It's a creamy liquid that goes in easily and you don't need much so she tolerates it if I'm quick getting it in.

For infections, my vet has also done one-time treatment at the office and repeats in two weeks that really knocks out problems quickly. We don't like to use that except for more serious infections though.

I personally hate the ear cleaners commonly sold that you have to pour in the dog's ears and make a real mess of them and everything around them. I use these wipes, twist them up, and insert into the ear to clean as far down as I can. Much less messy and the dogs don't mind it as much either.

I like the looks of those wipes! After having a dog with uber ear issues I clean my dogs ears now regularly. I use the Avino ear cleaner (I buy at the vet) and wet a make up pad. I then just clean as you do with your wipe. I’m also not a fan of dousing ear canal...I figure if the ear canal is ok why create issues? I’m not too sure about using vinegar in the ear even diluted...vinegar is an acid and any problems already there could cause burning. I wouldn’t put anything liquid in the ear unless it’s veterinary approved.

interesting- I hadn't heard of that. when did you use it?
We have had Claro administered for one of our dogs who had repeated ear infections and was allergic to Otomax which is the most common treatment. Claro is a one time application done by a vet, it is very effective and not super expensive (our vet charged $33.88 for the application). I assume your vet did an ear smear with cytology which should indicate exactly what is causing the infection...that too is not super expensive ($23.00 at our vet's). If that hasn't been done it would be worth it to do.

Thank you.

Going to check with the vet on the suggested meds. thank you.
