Eating people food

There is a difference between people food and dog food?

If your mother is feeding her whole, healthy foods (meats, veggies, eggs) and not pizza, hot pockets, and beer, then it's all good. I personally don't want my dogs being fed from my plate, because they learn to beg, but if you can live with it, then fine.

mmmmmmmhhhhh Pizza and Beer!!!!

I agree, just watch what is being feed and adjust accordingly. I think it's so special you have your Mom and that she really wants to interact with the pup and so what if she feeds a little here n there... Sounds like it'd be worth it.

I agree with watching what is being fed, but see no problem with it.

I use the leftover meats from our dinners as training treats. I rinse the meat off (sauces/spices etc.) dry it, cut into pieces and freeze with the date on the bag. Then, training time, I grab a bag and use. The dogs love it, and I think it helps keep their stomach used to getting different foods, so that they aren't sensitive to food changes.

Lol....I understand completely. My mom is 85 and Mystique LOVES to visit Nanny. Not only does she get to lick Nanny's face, get told how beautiful she is and is allowed to do her happy paw dance...there is usually a very doggie unnutrious snack such as arrowroot bisquits or Dad's cookies waiting. We cringe a little and remind Mom that she is little and only needs a little piece of cookie. As our puppy is staring at us with the same "naa naa I'm at Nanny's house" look that kids use to have.
Gives my mom great joy...and apparently puppy too....
I have a special little bag of dog nutritious treats on the counter now waiting to go to Mom's. They have a bow on them and a little card that says "just for when I come to visit...Love Mystique". Here's hoping.....

Olive has next to no interest in people food. She will run to check out anything that is accidentally dropped on the floor, sniff it, then kind of shrug her shoulders and go "meh" and walk away. We had to experiment a lot before we found food rewards that would work (her attention span is nil). The only time I give her people food is when training, and then she gets hot dog bits or cheese - I use shredded sharp cheddar rolled into little melty balls so she can get a taste without really eating much. A teaspoon lasts for about 15 rewards.

What about asking your Mom to help work with Mystique and new tricks? Simple things, maybe nodding yes/no, but then Mystique would know she'd have to work for the treat.

Can you make sure that Mom has a supply of small doggie treats on-hand? A small plastic container of treats on Mom's table or near her chair might be easy. That way, Mom can feed treats and have some Sheltie snuggle-time, but also won't be making the pup sick or encouraging the eating of people-food. :) Although small carrot bites make great treats!
