Extremely dry skin and red rear end.

My guy has dry patches of skin all over his body. We have tried changing foods a few times and that has not helped.

What can I do to help him? What is good to put on it?

Also his rear end is always red and I do not believe he is straining.

Any insight would be great.

Thank you.

Have you consulted your vet? I think I would take him in and have the skin checked out by the vet. I have seen it before but I can't remember what it is called but Shelties can have a skin disorder. I really think I would check with the vet before I tried anything else.

Vet Time

It definitely sounds like time to see your vet. I think you've probably done all you can do by switching your dog's food.

Yup, it's vet time. I also have found that Peace and Kindness spray works very well, especially on a red bum. We swear by it!

When I showed that to my vet, he really in no uncertain terms told me he was against using that stuff. Bows also had the dry patchy skin and her butt was red. I tried using on her for a couple days and soon we found her throwing up a very dark colored vomit. I figured the silver was causing the dark color and that she was licking it off. The vet said her skin problems were caused by alleries and her butt was infected, probably by rubbing it on the ground.

Wow!! That's really odd; I'm so sorry that happened to your furkid. I think everyone should find a vet they trust and follow that vet's directions. My vet is fine with Peace and Kindness, and I've had nothing but good results with it. It just goes to show you that, like people, every Sheltie is an individual. No one thing works for every dog!
