Fainly swallowed plastic

I dropped a single-use container of Restasis and he got to it before I realized it. The container is plastic, hard square edges, about 2"x1/2". He is in no obvious distress and ate some canned food just now. The container was mostly empty; I don't think the Restasis itself is a problem, but how about the container? He will be 3 this January 23, and weighs 48.5 pounds, a big guy. Should it be safe to watch him and if no problems, no vet? Thank you.

Two inches of hard plastic with edges sounds concerning to me. Not sure what to tell you. I would call the vet at least and see what they recommend. If they eat something you witness, you can give a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to make them vomit. I wonder if he swallowed the plastic whole or chewed it. Sorry - Shelties will eat anything, it seems. Hope he's OK.

Yes, absolutely vet. He will most likely need an xray to see where it is. That doesn't sound like a size that will pass, but I don't know for sure, and I would not take a chance with peroxide to make him vomit. A hard piece could injure him on the way back up. Your vet may tell you differently but it's not a chance I would take. I hope he's OK! Please let us know.

If it was something swallowed and you saw, I'd give Hydrogen Peroxide to induce vomiting. For my youngest, who eats everything and is about 16 Lbs, he gets a 10 ml dose which is low for his size. If he does not vomit within 10-15 minutes, I do a second dose. Per his weight, I can give more per dose, but I chose to go with a lesser dose just because it is hard on the belly. Deacon eats so much stuff he should not, I don't bother the vet any more unless it doesn't come up. This week, he ate a hand knitted dish cloth my sister gave me for Christmas; I wasn't a big fan so wasn't upset. When he vomited, I also found a silk hair scrunchy that was my daughters.

Once it makes it way into the digestive system, a vet is needed as are xrays.

Here is an excellent article from the AKC about what to do when your dog swallows foreign objects, and when to induce vomiting. As I said earlier, I would not induce vomiting if the piece was hard and had sharp edges. It can injure him coming back up. And as the AKC article says, if it's more than 2 to 6 hours since he swallowed it, that's too late to induce.

I hope you've been able to reach your vet and Fainly is OK.

Urgh, Della doess this all the time, I forever find things in her poop that she has eaten, darn dogs with Pica. Hopefully it will pass through ok, and maybe clear out the anal glands at the same time :smile2:.
