You did say that Odin is still under a year so he DEFINITELY doesn't have his coat yet. Some times it can take up to 3 years for his coat to come in. We didn't realize that it took so long with my parent's sheltie, we just accepted that he didn't have a full coat. It took him the full 3 years for it to come in and he's beautiful now.

Words of hope! I thought he was doomed. I'll be looking forward to his full coat. He needs it this winter with how cold it's been.
 
It really depends on the dog, I think.

At 10 months, Bacca who appears to be a red sable (someday I need someone to validate my claim!) has a thick outer coat but short and not alot of undercoat.

Also at 10 months, Indy, a tri, has a gorgeous thick coat and except for his ruff which is still abit short, looks mostly grown in, inside and outside coat. Even at that the only trimming required is around his ears and nails.

Feathers on both pups are still relatively short.

My forever pup, Timber had a lovely coat at 12 or 14 months.

It's mostly genetics, I suppose (but I don't think you can even predict how quickly a coat will grow in on that basis). I do know that 2 to 3 years is not unheard of! (Perish the thought!)

Looking at your album, Odin somewhat resembles Indy's (your tri?) coat but a little bit longer. Although, it seems to be the same thickness. I will have to post pictures of Odin soon!
