Flat vs. Padded throatpiece

So we're looking into upgrading Olive's leash (for those keeping track, this will be her 5th*).
After talking to the company we have three options for a martingale collar/leash:
1/4" rolled throatpiece (think it might be too thin and bite a bit if she pulls at all)
1/2" flat throatpiece
1/2" flat throatpiece + thin padding (will probably add 1/4" to it) (afraid we'd be back to the same problem I had with the flat nylon collars with separation of the ruff)

I'm leaning towards the 1/2" flat since it will interfere with her coat less but I like the idea of padding if it wouldn't separate her coat

Thoughts?

*First was a weird nylon leash DH picked up before we got Olive that I didn't like the feel of, then was a flexi so we could work on recall before the dog park was installed, third was the snap leash we got with her, and the last was a thin nylon martingale that is alright but not ideal.
 
She has a safety collar that holds her tags that's not strong enough to hook a leash to. She's a bit of a Houdini when excited (those sheltie spins...) so I do want to have a martingale lead, I just think I may be over-thinking the collar piece.

yes- if that's just for walking- it won't be like she's wearing it all day.....
